The Alternatives

I recently almost sold my '97 S320 LWB which is with the exception of few nicks here and there, like a new car. Last Friday a neighbor agreed to buy it on Monday and then backed out. Between Friday and Monday I've been pondering what vechicle was next for the family. I was thinking an SRT 300 or even an SRT Charger. Went to go look at them but did not take a test drive cause there were no second hand models (of either)in the lots. Anyway I checked out the new ones, both the Charger and 300. Some nice features my W140 does not have, I'll admit that like Navigation and DVD. Real nice seats. But still it seemed cheap by contrast. The seats were nice but the rest of the interior was of rental fleet quality. Even on the outside the car just looked cheap, especially up close and its hard to put it into words. 425hp sounds nice but I'd have to give up my W140 and cough up at least $20k more. Suddenly it didn't sound like such a good deal. So I started thinking of other cars. A second hand Jaguar XJR started looking pretty good so I checked it out as well. Believe it or not, its really not all that roomy inside and I like big cars. I may wait and get an M5 later on or even E55. I dont know.

So what I'm getting at is, if you were to give up your W140's, what other cars would you consider?.

A V12 600 of the 140 variety is a great car. The engines and trans last 200k from all accounts.

ooops, I put this in the wrong forum. Oh well. The S600 from what I hear in the W140 section is probably more trouble than its worth. No doubt the engine can make it to 200k miles its just that the rest of it wont without seriously draining the wallet.

Find a nice 98 or so AMG E55 to play with. With all the new AMG's coming out the older ones are sliding down the depreciation scale. The car is very roomie and does not seem to have the "convenience" bugs that the E320 and E430 have.

I sold my E320 to buy a XJR and while I love the car, like you said there is not alot of room inside. Im pushing the limits being 6'2" and keeping enough room for my son in the back. Its a great car, fast(I did a 13.8 at 104mph and on the dyno it put out 300rwhp and 335ft/lbs of trq) and the styling is great!! However syling came before function and that being said the interior and trunk are very small. If you were looking for more space an M5 or E55 would be a better choice!

My Car WOO HOO...... Now SOLD
New car.... 2001 Jaguar XJR!!!!

Actually before we bought our E280 we did look at and test drove a XKR here in Jakarta but it di not have as many options as the E does and the E just felt better driving it. Add that with the fact that the XJR was another 30.000 USD in price above and beyond what I paid for the E and it id not make sense to buy it. Besides here resale value for any Jags suck.
