Looks like the Senate is going to change hands, too.

With both houses in the Democrats hands I predict that Bush will discover the veto.

Lame he maybe, but with a majority so slim nothing will get passed without an awful lot of cooperative log-rolling. This will replay Clinton's final 2 years. Including impeachment?

I think the Dems will be mindful of not appearing to be 'spoilers' in the short term since the real benefit will be in the presidential run. I predict more evolution than revolution in the coming months, even so far as Iraq is concerned.

Humble politicians? G'way witcha.

PS If the Dems really did work in a spirit of cooperation for the good of the people rather than for the party it would make Bush look like a great statesman, not them. Remember how Clinton gets all of the credit for balancing the budget and for welfare reform. fairness is never going to happen in the land of perception being reality.

The result would be losing the presidency in '08. To gain the presidency in '08 the Demos have to continue with their present policy of opposing anything that has a whiff of making the president look good. OTOH with the number of extreme partisans gaining committee control it is going to be awfully difficult for the House leadership to maintain discipline.

The new committee chairmen will be under great pressure to undo what the Repos have done. If that happens in a sufficiently acrimonious fashion then the Repos could have a tactical advantage in '08, when many of the tax issues will begin to come-up for renewal. The Repos will argue that the Dems want to raise taxes. That perception drilled holes in Walter Mondale v Reagan. It's just about the only positive issue the Repos will have left so count on them milking it.

The other likely stumbling block for Demos will be extremely heavy pressure from the activist-left to go after Bush. If they did it right they could mollify their base without doing themselves much serious damage. OTOH if they go after him and it looks like a political vendetta then the repos will savage the Dems just as the Repos got it in the ass vs Clinton. IMO that impeachment, motivated by Repos sucking-up to their social-conservative activist base, set-up the party to be labeled as the religious-right's lap-dog. That perception has damaged the Repos tremendously. If the Dems go after Bush they better have reaally good evidence of actual crime, not just political differences.

The Repubs blew it and now it's time for the Dems to do something. This is their chance to prove they can do what they have said the Repubs couldn't. They have a massive opportunity to own the Whitehouse in '08 if they make former issues (renew tax cuts, withdrawal from Iraq, etc.) their issues. The real fun is going to be watching to see if the Dems can hold on to this or if they succumb to the temptation to turn this into a vendetta against Bush like the Repubs did with Clinton.

I agree completely. Other than a change in Committee Chairs, and some bills that have been stalled finally getting to the floor for votes, there will not be a screaming attack on the direction ala Contract on America. If you listened to what Dean "didn't say" last night when asked about 100 day agenda, taht was more telling than a "kickass, take names" attitude that he had a right to take for the evening [not the next two years].
