I had the same thought--not that there was a Krispy Kreme nearby, but that "what the hell are all these cops doing right here!" They seemed to come out of nowhere... It gave both a good and a bad feeling, if you know what I mean.

If you were in Baltimore you would have been dead for at least one hour before the cops show up, It's an internal secret policy not to show up while the action is hot because they don't want to get hurt. I speak from experience

( 1 ) Write down EVERYTHING that you can remember from just before to just after the Police got involved. Do not leave out any details no matter how small, it's the little things that will make your case. Do that as soon as possible.
( 2 ) File a complaint with the Police and be sure to follow up with the State or County Attorney General. You want to get everything on record as soon as possible. Like the cops told me: The guy that gets there first gets the best hearing.
( 3 ) Don't sweat it if he gets your address, the end result if he tries to do something as "revenge" is jail time for him and the second offense will be very serious.
( 4 ) If the Attorney General offers you a number of options as punishment for the purp. go for something that shows your not out for revenge yourself. The more reasonable YOU sound the better you case will be handled.
( 5 ) The courts don't like road rage cases. In my case it was a hand full of change thrown at my car which resulted in chipped paint, and some very slight physical abuse to my wife. (The purp. was a woman.)
She ended up with 60 hours of civil service (picking up garbage at the side of the road, washing bus wheels, etc. in the dead of Winter) and picking up the tab for my insurance deductible ($250). The insurance company will likely go after her for their losses as well ($1,000), so her punishment was pretty severe for what she did............
If you like, PM me and we can go over what happened to me and what worked out the best.
Thanks Bruce. One of the reasons I started this thread last night, right after the incident, was to capture my thoughts and recollections while they were fresh. And I'm following up today, after I had time to sleep on it. The cop brought me a complaint form last night at my home and I plan to fill it out and give it back to him today. He told me I would probably have to go to court, which I have decided to do. Will PM you if it looks like I need more help.

Crackhead? Meth head? Sounds like either some serious mental disorder or "substance-induced" behavior.

Write EVERYTHING down as has been suggested. If you have a voice recorder, make voice notes to yourself as you remember things. It'll help you to keep from "second guessing" yourself later about details.

I wouldn't be worried about retribution. If the guy is that stupid, he'll end up a LOT worse off. But keep the doors locked and the guns loaded as a precaution. And brush up on your home defense laws/procedures (typically an intruder in the house is entitled to one warning and then you're allowed to do whatever you feel is necessary in the face of imminent danger including use of deadly force, but check your laws).

You'll win this. No doubt.

Years ago one of my friends and I were jumped by a well-known bunch of town punks that happened to be in the area hanging out, drinking. Just flat-out jumped for no reason. I kicked one guy in the nuts and got away. My buddy got away too but took a few hits beforehand. Called the cops, they found the guys quickly and we pressed charges - they pled guilty to assault and battery and two of 'em got 1-3 year suspended sentences as I recall. Basically if they f*ck up again in the next 10 years or something, they'd automatically do their suspended time.

It was a long time ago so my recollections might be a bit fuzzy, but the general jist of what I'm trying to say is despite what political ads tend to imply - the courts do NOT coddle criminals and take unprovoked physical acts on innocent people pretty seriously. You'll almost certainly end up putting this guy in his place based on your account of the situation.

Best of luck to you.
Thanks: He definitely had a serious problem. My guess is he will plead guilt and get court-order counseling. I really don't care if he gets jail time or a big fine. I just want him to get help.

Police Report

Here is the report I filed:

On Friday, November, 3, 2006 at about 6:45p I was traveling West on Clinton Parkway, approaching Kasold Drive, when I came up behind a vehicle that was barely moving. The driver seemed to be impaired somewhat, weaving slowly left and right within the right-hand lane of traffic. At one point he stopped in that lane of traffic. There was no one in front of him and I flipped my high beams on and off twice, quickly. He then started to move slowly and abruptly stopped in front of me and I honked my horn one time. I did not lay on the horn—just one “beep.” At which point he started to go forward, and opened his car door and started to wave both hands out of his window. I blinked my lights again, one time, at which point he jumped out of his car while it was still moving. I think he must have pulled the hand brake as he exited his car and started running toward me, shaking his fists in the air and yelling something. I had my windows up and could not hear what he was saying, but I saw something shiny in his right hand. At first I thought he had a gun. As he got closer to my car, I thought it was a knife. But as he got up to my left front bumper, he was screaming and shaking his fists at me, and I could see that it was neither a gun nor knife. But wasn’t sure what it was. I didn't have a weapon, so I grabbed my cell phone, pointed to it and yelled "9-1-1" and started to call the police, at which point he flipped his right wrist and this large baton-like weapon quickly telescoped out approximately 18-24” in length! It appeared to be a silver, steel, telescoping baton. As I continued to dial, he pulled back his arm, with the weapon in his right hand, as thought he were going to break out my window and/or take off my head. So I accelerated my car past him, around his car, and quickly turned right (North) on Kasold, while holding my cell phone. (I expected him to hit my car as I sped away, but he did not.) I could see in my rearview mirror that he ran back to his car and came after me while I was calling the police. The dispatcher told me to precede North on Kasold until I was intercepted by police units, which were waiting for us near the intersection of 15th and Kasold. They pulled us over on Kasold, just past 14th Street. Officers spoke with the man in the car behind me, and then came up and talked to me. Office Matthew Weidl took my statement and other information, and then told me to proceed home, which I did. He later brought this LPD Statement Form by my home and asked me to fill it out. To the best of my recollection, this is what happened.

This is what I turned in to the Attorney General's office:

They took it and ran with it... Like I said, all the detail you can possibly remember, and they REALLY hate road rage incedents.

I usually bring a Mossberg pistol grip pump along when I travel interstate. It's legal in all states and you can fit it into a long tool box to carry it in and out of hotel rooms, and most airlines will ship it in the baggage compartment. Pistols are too problematic. A 12 ga will actually prevent more violence than cause it, as one look down the barrel will cause most tough guys to piss their pants.

In Texas and Louisiana, I usually pack an M-1 carbine paratroop model with a 30 rd clip. You need the extra fire power. It also fits nicely in a tool box. You can lay it across the back seat with the lid open to keep it handy in traffic. I would have killed baton bitch.

My favorite pistol is a Browning Hi-Power I've had for thirty years. I still think it is the most concealable pistol with the most firepower, altho I bet it is now outclassed by a lot of the new stuff. The last time I actually fired it was back in the 80's, I hope it still works.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
