I don't think pure communism can work any better than pure capitalism. It really is a synthesis of the two that has become the predominant way to govern advanced societies. America, Europe, and especially China, are all some kind of mix of capitalist and socialist ideas. It has led to fairly stable societies. The US, contrary to popular belief, when it was pure capitalist from 1800 to about 1933, was racked by civil war, high crime, corruption and frequent economic depression while it's old folks died in the alleys. The introduction of socialist ideas by Roosevelt saved this country. China is going through the same thing from the opposite direction, coming from Maoism, which was about the purist forms of Communism practiced on the planet, to what is now a synthesis of capitalism and communism. It is allowing them to advance as a society in the point they may eclipse our own as the leading economy.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
