A lot of people didn't get it, others did and intentionally twisted it as a political ploy. It's a mistake to think that John Kerry would disparage servicemen, he didn't get where he is today by being that thick. It's a mistake to think that GW and company didn't understand the meaning of Kerry's remark, they didn't get where they are today by being that thick. It's also a mistake to paint half the people in this country as thick by virtue of party affiliation. This whole 'us and them' mentality promoted by Rove and company is frighteningly effective. I will never understand how people in this country can go about the business of their day to day lives believing that fully half the citizenry of our great country is their sworn enemy -- strangest thing I ever saw. Kerry's remark was one in a string of roasts aimed at GW, it was worded poorly. That's all there is folks....

Kerry used the joke on the Daily Show a few weeks before and did not screw it up. Here it is:

"Do you know where you end up if you don't study, if you aren't smart, if you're intellectually lazy? You end up *getting us* stuck in a war in Iraq."

He just hosed it on that speech and everyone jumped on it. It did sound bad when screwed up. When done right, it makes perfect sense.

In the original joke, he mentioned everything except the drinking and cocaine, which was pretty kind.

But everyone gets to jump on the error. Now you guys on the right know how we on the left feel weekly when W makes a "mis-statement". First it's WTF, then this is FUNNY, then let's make fun, then Jeez, this moron is running the country.

That's much more fitting for a US Sen to say about a sitting Pres.

This is called a "Rushie" or a "Drudge", and the process is called "Swift Boating" - phony issues made up for talk show shit heads so the GOP can detract from their own failures. Problem they have this year is that the electorate is made up of less and less morons. Kerry is simply saying what we all know, if you blow it academically coming out of high school and you're poor your only other choice in a land awash with the GOP's wage busting illegals, the only avenue open to you is to go into The Fucking George Bush Meat Grinder.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I don't argue that it is a poor joke for a Senator to make but we have seen that all decorum went out the door when Karl Rove came in the door six years ago so this is not the first insult by a Senator against a setting President [Clinton or Bush] nor will it be the last since Rove started his smear campaigning in 2000. It went on before but the level leaped at that point. Character assassination by the White House or by MOC should not be tolerated but we have gone beyond that, and I fear we will never back behind that line.

The joke, while funny, and I think accurate, is better left to the late night comics. They tend to not botch it.
