I must be ready for the geriatric pile. No Abbot & Costello, Harold Loyd, Chaplin or Jerry Lewis? Frenchman Louis de Funes made many great comedic movies, even Belmondo had a few.

I was disappointed that no Abbot and Costello or or Laurel and Hardy [or Cooke and Moore for that matter] were on. "Sailor's Beware" with Lewis and Martin was a very nice light little comedy with one scene that always sticks with me where Lewis is in the crowd mentioning what town he is from, get cheers, mentions another, more cheers and then mentions Harlan KY, where I am from. I have tried for years to find out who put that little line in the film.

I haven't seen most of these movies. Some of them are oldies that predate my movie-viewing days. Others are late entries (last decade) when I outgrew the (age-group) movie crowd and found sex was a better form of entertainment worth spending money on.

Mi$ter Right.

imho almost all comedies nowadays are geared toward the simple-minded extra butter popcorn crowd. Plenty of fart and poo poo humor and very little quality content. Then you have the Sandler movies that ALL share the same formula ie: Hapless doofus looks like idiot then wins the hearts of all and gets the girl. I found Old School painful to watch as were most contemporary movies on that list. I realize these are all from big budget houses that must see a return for their investors and there is little room for taking chances like Office Space or even What's up Tiger Lilly. So you know where I'm at, I thought Friends was the smelliest piece of shit to contaminate my airwaves while I think the Colbert Report is pure genius.

I agree completely. Most of the movies do seem geared to college aged now, that did not used to be the case. I think Animal House may have set the bar and everyone is now trying to do their best to lower it.

Colbert is on a different level. It requires you to think. It is the only show on TV my wife has to stop reading in order to watch. We won't get much quick, witty reparte in the writing when a flash of boobs or random fart will get the crowd rolling. It is the loss of that generation as they won't have quality memories of movies that relate to events in their lives. I just don't see that "First Date - Southpark Uncut" memory on the ol' 50th anniversary.

Blake Edward's "SOB" comes to mind, as do two more from the Coen Bros: "Raising Arizona" and "O Brother Where Art Thou?"
