BARRON'S COVER: The GOP Victory

Survivor! The GOP Victory

By JIM MCTAGUE

"JUBILANT DEMOCRATS SHOULD RECONSIDER their order for confetti and noisemakers. The Democrats, as widely reported, are expecting GOP-weary voters to flock to the polls in two weeks and hand them control of the House for the first time in 12 years -- and perhaps the Senate, as well. Even some Republicans privately confess that they are anticipating the election-day equivalent of Little Big Horn. Pardon our hubris, but we just don't see it..."

McTague's methodology has called races correctly for the last 30 years. Read it and weep kookbergers!

Can one be pro-USA and against Iraq? Yes if one learns to think. Try Jay, try!

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

How can any thinking citizen of this country be against us, and a dozen other nations, working together to help 12 million Iraqis create a democracy in the middle of the Middle East?

Jay, your party has made it more than obvious that it is virtually indistinguishable for the Democrat Party. The Republicans have given no good reason why anybody should cast their votes for a Repo candidate.

The best you've come up with is, "Vote Republican, we're not Democrats!" How is that any freaking different from what the Democrats say? It exemplifies political timidity. Who wants to vote for that? May as well vote for a Democrat.

Barron's is a good magazine and so far the only one to come out with this hedge. Nearly everyone else is calling either left or too close to call. We will know in two weeks.

J, most of the people against the war in Iraq are not against "us" as in the US. We are against the Administration's lies and piss poor planning that created a quagmire and got entirely too many civilians killed [between 100,000 and 500,000] all in the name of WMD [oops, that’s not it], getting Saddam [good start but that was not it either], no Democracy, yes that is it, giving Iraq the Blue Finger of Freedom. But now, since Bushi did not even know about all that shite, sunni, baathist stuff before bombing the shit out of them he has a Civil AND Religious War going on that he can’t Control or Spin. So we “Stay the Course”, OOPS, sorry, “Change the Course”. Maybe split Iraq into three different Countries or maybe a Five Leader Cabal [not a Democracy but hey!!!]. The Democracy thingie might not be working out so well since we sorta cut the knees out from under the “elected” leader last week. He seems VERY pissed. But not pissed enough to stop taking our money.

And about the Coalition of the Willing. There are not twelve countries anymore. On the good side, the Dutch are debating on sending reinforcements to Iraq. Seems that they are going to send Prostitutes to Aid and Comfort the troops. Hopefully they won’t forget Poland also.
