The real question is where they send him. 24 years in Club Fed ain't that bad. 24 years at Marion or Leavenworth, or even worse, in the notoriously bad federal lockup in downtown Houston, would probably shorten his life.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

I suspect if he minds his P's & Q's, they'll make him the golf pro within a couple of years.

He'll stay out of jail on appeal for a decade. If he finally does get hard time it will be a country club prison in all liklihood.

Hate to sidetrack this (NOT!), but what do you guys think of country club prisons for white collar offenders? To me it is a separate justice system. I think everybody should get sent to the same pleasure palaces. That would get some prison reform tout de suite. Instead, we send rich honkies one way and our dusky brethren into hellish pits of torment. Does anybody give sh*t? I haven't heard a politician take that up as a cause celebre.

He got 24+ years...

while protesting his innocence all the way.

I do like the way CNN reported this, with the numerical breakdown.

The day in numbers: 24 years, four months

(CNN) -- Former Enron chief executive Jeffrey Skilling has been sentenced to 24 years and four months for leading one of the biggest corporate scandals in U.S. history that destroyed the company.

77: The age Skilling, currently 52, will be if serves the entire length of his 24-year and four-month sentence, handed down Monday for his role in the collapse of Enron.

$45 million: Figure Skilling was ordered to pay in restitution, as part of his sentence, to Enron investors, who lost millions of dollars when the company collapsed. Thousands of employees lost their jobs and retirement funds.

19: The number of charges Skilling was found guilty of on May 25, 2006, out of a total of 28 charges of fraud, conspiracy, insider trading and lying to auditors. Skilling says he will appeal the 19 criminal accounts.

$183 million: Amount prosecutors say Skilling and Lay pocketed while participating in fraud. The U.S. government had divided that amount between Skilling and Lay, but Lay's death left that amount solely on Skilling. The collapse wiped out thousands of jobs, more than $60 billion in market value and more than $2 billion in pension plans.

56: Length of the trial, in days, which ended with a jury verdict on May 25, 2006.

64: The age of former Enron chairman and CEO Kenneth Lay when he died on July 5 while vacationing in Colorado. Lay was also found guilty on May 25 of 10 counts against him and was due to be sentenced on October 24.

$30 million: Debt Skilling owes his legal team. The amount is in addition to the $23 million that the Justice Department allowed him to set aside for legal fees before it froze his assets.

$132 million: Annual salary Skilling earned during one year as CEO of Enron.

3: Number of children Skilling has from his first marriage, which ended in divorce in 1997. In March 2002, he married Rebecca Carter, a former vice president for board communications and board secretary at Enron.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

I see prison as a retirement altenative if the social security system fails and my savings are wiped out for whatever reason. If I can get into a country club setting all the better. Now I have to PLAN for whatever will be needed to get me there.

So does he check-in immediately or does he stay out while his appeal is processed (and his room is made-up)?
