Question Ex-pats working in Germany

Hey hey, an non politically charged off-topic thread!

I am would like to hear any opinions and experiences, good or bad, about working and living in Germany as a non native.

I have a degree in International Relations and am going to finish my latest degree of Construction Management in June of 08. My dream of dreams is to move to Germany asap and work in the construction industry there, most likely in Heavy/Civil construction...energy production really interests me. I am fully aware that it might take some time to gain experience here in the states first, but I like to plan ahead and so I am curious to know if any of you could give some insight into the idea of moving to Germany. There is really no other place on this planet, besides Washington, where I would rather live, and the fact that it is home to Mercedes Benz is not the only reason but a damn fine one

I have traveled to H.K., China, Portugal, and lived in Spain. My experience in Germany was when I spent 10 days traveling with a German friend of mine in Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Frankfurt, and Munich. However brief and limited my experience was, I have never felt more at home there in Germany as I do in different states of this country. My last name is German due to my German blood from my fathers side of the family, so traveling to Germany was like my haj for muslims.

Please share.

[QUOTE=Jillian80]Why do you hate America?

Uhhhhhh, I don't believe I ever mentioned hating America in the previous statement. I prefer Germany. Is that wrong? I can tell you that the older I get, the less I like this nation, and what it is becoming. Yes, I am tired of the surge of illegal's over the southern border... I am tired of the democrats and republicans doing nothing to secure a strong and stable economic and social structure for this country. But this was not the point of my question, and these issues are dragged out too often on this forum and no one is going to change there minds here, I would accomplish more by pissing into the wind.

Does this mean I hate this country? Not at all. It is simply that I would rather live in Germany, and I know that there is a lot of building going on in Germany, something I covered in my thesis. I am one who enjoys living in different places and experiencing differnent cultures in their natural environment. And of all of the societies in this world, I feel quite at home in the German society/culture, so I figure... why not live there?

Funny you should ask. I have been offered work there, not in a factory, but I decided against it. China is a personal conundrum for me. While I don't have a problem with the chineese as a race or people, I really don't trust their government and the economic and military threat that they pose to our future. Competition is great! don't get me wrong, but our current economic and trade deals that we have with them, and quite frankly with all nations is absurd, we are selling ourselves out so that the corporations that depended upon our labor can cash out and leave our middle class behind like a cheap whore in a motel room. This is including their disregard for basic human rights( I know we arent perfect either), as well as their lack of protecting intellectual property.

I have traveled there for about two weeks, and it is an amazing place, but I want no part in helping them develop. I know they are developing and whatnot, but I cannot imagine living in that place and in that mass of people. Both China and India concern me in the ways that they are developing and the western appetites that they have. We as a species cannot continue to consume this planet's resources at the ever increasing paces that we do and expect to have a bright future. China, has no regard for environmental conservation when it comes to developing their cities, I remember to this day that I couldn't see across the city because the air pollution was so bad, people were dusting their cars in the mornings because of fallen soot. This was before the boom of personal automobiles too.

Besides, Chineese is too hard to learn, they should just learn english

Having lived abroad myself {I lived in Windsor, UK for 2 years}, I can say its a good experience, but you can get a little homesick at times. Do you speak German? If not that could complicate things. Also, in Europe they typically have MUCH better public transportation than they do here.

Good luck!

Of course presuming you are US citizen you can come back.

Europe is nice to visit.

US is nice to live in.
