It could have all been so simple: if we had whacked Saddam and his murder twin kidos, we could have gotten to the next nut in line to take over - his main concern for the next five years or so would be consolidating his power. Baathism is a much better form of government for a state like this anyway - it is secular, it emphasizes rights for women and a separation of church and state. The biggest fraud committed on all of us by the Bush/Cheney Mob was in convincing most of the people in the US that Saddam was simply some other faction of Islamic Fundamentalism - a lie, a vicious fucking lie, a murderous lie. These people were on the same path to democracy the Turks had followed: a militarist socialist period, which would have been followed by progressively more liberal juntas and governments until Islam was fully removed from government and Democracy could succeed. It's the only way this has happened in history. If we had just left these people alone, they would have been Ok. They were no threat to us. George Bush committed the most profligate, criminal, utterly depraved act of treason in American history: vicious, murderous lies for the purpose of hijacking the 9-11 tragedy in order to pursue a completely different agenda.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
