JMHO, but since you noted you drive mostly on freeways with not too much traffic, the advantages of a hybrid are less significant. Those things get their best fuel economy with a light foot around town; wind them up on the freeway and they're not much better than straight gas.

Since safety is up on your list -- and limiting it to your vehicle choices -- my pick would be the benz.

Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)

The reason I want a newer vehicle is safety (airbags). I saw an accident the other day on the way home, a guy in a late model T-Bird (not the retro one) had drifted onto the shoulder an smacked into the rear of a semi. When I got up next to the collision, the driver was sitting there, talking to a fireman, looking like he was passing the time of day. The airbag had deployed. The car was totaled. The driver was fine.
I believe the chances of getting killed in my car under similar circumstances are rated at 25% or 1 in 4. Not very good odds.

A golf or Jetta tdi would also suit your purposes, but the Beetle tdi is a very very safe small vehicle. I owned a '96 Passat tdi previously, and dearly miss its inherent practicality, safety and 40+ mpg. Go VW
