The US has only two choices in the "illegals" debate. Either start throwing people who employ them into prison until people stop giving them jobs, or begin the orderly unification of the United States and Mexico, which is inevitable any way. Everything else, fences, border patrol, all of it is bullshit - as long as people give them jobs, they will find a way to get here, and those who want their labor will make it possible for them to stay. Myself, I would ask Mexicon to hold an election on the question, and if that is what they want, declare each state in Mexico a territory of the US just like we did in the Old West, and admit each territory when they could demonstrate that they could fulfill the requirements of the US Constitution. Just about all of the agricultural and tourista sections of Mexico could be admitted right away. The rest of Mexico would need some radical anti-crime solutions, but hey, we're good at that and we can show them how to build lots of prisons just like we do. It would do a great deal of good for millions of people, and give hope to the millions in Mexico who simply yearn to live in a true democratic society.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
