Le France

dieu France, 'allo land of the free
Interview: Jasper Gerard meets Bernard-Henri Lévy

On the Left Bank of the Seine, the smoke of Gauloises and rays of warm autumnal sunshine merrily entwine in a cafe made famous by Sartre and Camus. Bernard-Henri Lévy, France’s most celebrated thinker, has dispensed with lunch and hungrily moves on to the main course: America.

Typical, I see you shrug: a Frenchman making mincemeat of “les cowboys”, as predictable as the Prince of Wales grousing about his hard-boiled eggs. Except BHL lauds America — with a reverence his countrymen normally reserve for snails in garlic sauce or sex in the afternoon. Even neocons — so reviled one almost inserts asterisks in their name — he praises as “angels” who represent “progress”.

His book American Vertigo, a travelogue from his “year in a country I love, that can never be boring”, has caused a sensation Stateside. It is the first French translation to top US bestseller lists for two decades and has just been updated for publication in Britain.

If only Bateman could draw a cartoon: “The Frenchman who declined to be beastly about Bush”. But you can almost hear the thud of hardbacks being hurled across the salons of France, a country that has come to define itself in opposition to America.

And while our intellectuals are exiled to provincial universities, occasionally allowed to inflict their stale breath and stale opinions on Newsnight Review, France affords BHL Beckhamesque celebrity. If the British refuse to take anything seriously, the French take everything seriously. When BHL speaks, France listens.

And watches, for BHL is a spectacle. Our conversation is interrupted by film directors and actresses shaking his hand. This tall, angular philosopher looks less Bertrand Russell than Keith Richards: wild black hair too long for one of 57, black glasses and black eyes.

His shirt is white, but almost entirely open, bar two overworked buttons at the bottom. He is married to a (not so young) starlet, Arielle Dombasle, and behaves like one himself, checking the snapper’s shots to approve the image. How, one wonders, did this extraordinary Gallic life-force go down in America, where he rubbed along with Richard Perle, George Soros, John Kerry, Warren Beatty and Sharon Stone — oh, and the odd murderer and Nevada prostitute?

And so, the obvious question: even after the fiasco of Iraq, how can he defend the neocon idea of ousting tyrants and imposing democracy? He quickly points out he did not support the Iraq war, and for familiar reasons.

He was clearly disgusted by the senior Machiavellian Bushite who told him privately that the notorious WMD claim was a “necessary lie”. But BHL, unlike the traditional left, does not shy from hard thought or uncomfortable solutions. Better, he says, that America topples dictators than props them up. We complain whatever America does, and we complain loudest when America does nothing. And while Europeans sneer at President George Bush’s dumbness, many neocons have a grasp of ancient philosophy that would shame our politicians.

“I believe,” he declares, “in the principles of the French revolution and human rights.” And these are based on Kant’s insistence that there is a morality; that some acts, like Saddam Hussein’s genocide, are evil. And if you really object, morality compels you to intervene. If the reasons for war in Iraq had been given truthfully and the country put back together again, one suspects today’s special guest would have supported military action.

12 readings, no answer. I guess les France don't deserve the fuss anymore.

They'll soon come up with a new fuck up that will revive consideration. Hang on !

How about bombing both Nazi Hezbollah and Israeli troups in lebanon.

Time's a spinning insanity.

Damn that is a weak article with no substance. It's like some ill conceived contrarian point of view with no defense of its point.

That's what happens when it's too intellectual for the rest of us. It's been too far this time. But also look closely to some other OT threads. Many are like what you describe although it's not so evident to spot them :-)

Makes this place a rare occasion to laught continuously at narrow minded and young brats.

Participating is even more THRILLING. But I hate US beer like Bud wiser taste like piss (yep ! twice piss in a thread) . I only drink german or heineken brew.
