ANOTHER school shooting, Part II
I would suppose one question might be, why was this kid not in a serious, locked-down treatment plan somewhere? I love the student who says she can't believe he's capable of shooting someone when he'd recently been suspended for throwing a stapler at a teacher and a chair at the principal. That's not exactly typical, socially-acceptable behavior, is it?
Principal killed at Wisconsin school; 9th-grader in custody
CAZENOVIA, Wisconsin (AP) -- A 15-year-old student walked into his high school Friday carrying a shotgun and a handgun and fatally shot his principal, Sauk County Sheriff Randy Stammen said.
The ninth-grader was then disarmed by the Weston High School custodian and other students, the sheriff told reporters at a news conference in this city northwest of Madison.
Principal John Klang was shot three times in the chest and head. He was initially taken to a medical center for surgery and was then transferred to the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Stammen said. The hospital said he died at 3:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET).
The sheriff said no one else was injured and there was no information on a motive for the shooting, which happened just after classes began.
Authorities identified the suspect as Eric Hainstock, holding up his mug shot at a news conference, and said he was charged as an adult with first-degree intentional homicide, punishable upon conviction by life in prison. Wisconsin does not have the death penalty. Hainstock is scheduled to appear in court Monday.
One student told a local reporter that the student who is accused in the shooting had recently been suspended for throwing a stapler at a teacher and for throwing a chair at the principal.
"I never thought (he) was capable of shooting anybody," she said.
Authorities said the student had remarked to a friend before the shooting that Klang "wouldn't make it through homecoming."
The school has two adjacent buildings, one of which houses students in kindergarten through eighth grade. The younger students were sent home on buses immediately after the incident.
Police and counselors are interviewing the high school students and then they will go home, Capt. Michael Hafemann of the sheriff's department said.
Weston High School also lost a student earlier Friday in a car accident, a school official said.
The school has canceled its football game and homecoming dance, which were scheduled for Friday night and Saturday.
Of Klang, Sauk County Sheriff Randy Stamen said, "He was a friend to all -- with one exception, obviously."
Cazenovia is about 50 miles northwest of Madison.
Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery. (Winston Churchill)
