Bye, bye, Tomcat...

Today the US Navy officially retired the F-14 Tomcat...a pretty amazing plane that has outlived it's usefulness.

It's a pretty good article: http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...4-tomcat_x.htm

"I really believe the Tomcat will be remembered in much the same way as other legendary aircraft, like the Corsair, the Mustang and the Spitfire."
Kind of an interesting comment, the Phantom II was probably a more used aircraft, but I never liked it much, big, heavy, and ugly. The Tomcat had some class, and it looked as fast as it was....

I went to an airshow a month ago and if I remember correctly, the pilot of this one was a pilot for the F-14.

I forgot what model this one was though. I seem to recall that they said it was the F-16 Fighter Falcon, but after looking at pics on the internet, I'm not so sure now.

I believe that's a F-18 Hornet. F-16 has one vertical stabilizer.

The Tomcat is a beautiful plane, but I was surprised to hear last night on CNN that it serviced in the Vietnam era. I thought the F-14 was the Phantom replacement, which was after the war in "Nam. Time flies when you are old.

That's what I thought. Loud as hell too. Next time I'll where the ear plugs when it flies by! Thanks!

F-4 Phantom went into production in 1958, and the F-14 was phased in in 1972. F-14 always was always one of my favorites, still is with the F-15 being tied for first in my mind. Not sure why, I just really like those two.
