What's at Stake in the November Elections?

The answer, quite simply, is America's security.

The Democrats have demonstrated repeatedly that the want us, in effect, to surrender to the Islamofascists in the war on terror. They want to gut the Patriot Act, they want to make us ever increasingly dependant on foreign, unreliable sources of oil by preventing domestic exploration, they want us to withdraw our troops from Iraq, unconditionally, leaving that country in the hands of radical shiite militias etc.

There is so much at stake in this election cycle. The loss of both houses of congress would be a disaster, not only for republicans, but, more importantly, for our nation's security.

The head of the RNC, Ken Mehlman, had a great article in the WSJ today highlighting the dangers of a Democratic victory in November. In it he mentions both foreign initiatives and domestic programs that would be vulnerable if the Democrats were to get control of congress.

I've snipped a few paragraphs below. The article can be seen in its entirety at: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1158...ml?mod=opinion

'Republicans Will Make History'
By KEN MEHLMAN
September 22, 2006; Page A10

..... In 46 days, the American people will make an important decision about how we prosecute that war: Do we stay on the offense and use every tool available to defeat the enemy, or do we elect leaders who would weaken America and surrender key tools we need to defeat the global jihad?

......Now we understand that we face a radical global movement of Islamic fascists, held together by a totalitarian ideology as deadly as the ones we faced in World War II or the Cold War. ..... That makes this enemy difficult to defeat. They constantly adapt -- so we must as well.

.......We learned on 9/11 the need for coordination between federal, state and local governments; yet the majority of congressional Democrats voted against re-authorization of the Patriot Act. The foiled airplane plot re-emphasized the importance of following an enemy whose command and control is often obscure; yet Democrats opposed the NSA surveillance program and praised an activist judge's attempt to shut it down.

We need to aggressively and effectively interrogate captured terrorists in order to stop their plans before they come to fruition; yet Democrats want to handcuff those efforts. Terrorists cannot build IEDs or buy weapons without funding, but when the New York Times disclosed a secret program that was tracking their financing, more than 85% of House Democrats voted against a resolution supporting the program and condemning its media disclosure. We need to stop rogue regimes like Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons; yet Democrats want to take any use of force off the table.

..... Osama bin Laden himself said that the American withdrawal from Somalia emboldened his movement before 9/11. Imagine the victory celebrations among the terrorists if we were to retreat from Iraq. Yet this is exactly what Howard Dean and a majority of Democrats would have us do. In 46 days, we must ask ourselves, would surrendering Iraq to the enemy make us safer -- or less safe?

Here at home, we are also working to reform government. We live in a global economy, one in which it is just as easy to create jobs in India as it is in Indiana. Republicans understand this, which is why we are committed to lower taxes, less regulation and fewer lawsuits. Republicans have cut taxes every year since George W. Bush was elected president. We have streamlined regulations, reformed bankruptcy laws, offered choice to Medicare recipients, and limited class-action lawsuits. The Democrats opposed every single one of those reforms -- and they are pledging to stand in our way as we move forward.

Republicans want to eliminate the death tax once and for all. Democrats want to bring it back. Republicans want to explore new sources of energy to bring gas and heating prices down. Democrats want to block domestic exploration. .... The list goes on and on.....

Yes, financial security. Something must be done to rein in this uber-liberal administration that seems determined to do everything in its power to bankrupt our nation.

It's normal to run up deficits during war time.

Get used to it. This is going to be a long struggle against Islamofascism.

I have a cocksure strategy for ending the war now: surrender.

Mi$ter Right.

There is no war -- there is a campaign against international criminals in Afghanistan and a disgraceful invasion/occupation in Iraq that was apparently initiated to line the pockets of members and friends of the Bush administration.

This nation is about to choose whether it wants to go deeper and deeper into the dark pit of fascism or reclaim who we really are: the most unique experiment in self government and freedom in human history, free men and women who live without being coerced by fear. If the Republicans win, then the fascist wing of the Republican Party, religious fascists, corporate fascists and militarists will take it as a signal to continue their campaign to end the great American experiment so they can enjoy the benefits of a two-class state. The Military-Industrial Murder Machine will do everything in its power to make that happen.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Don't worry about it. With people in denial (such as yourself) as well as those liberals secretly hoping for an American defeat we won't be celebrating a victory lap anytime soon.

However when we wind up fighting the Islamofascists on our own shores we'll be able to make good use of people like you as cannon fodder.

Yes, how did the concept of conservatism ever become erroneously linked to the waging of war? Warfare is only conservative in nature if it is considered a constant and natural state of existence, which would then qualify it as fascism. If war is not considered a constant and natural state of existence, then it is the result of liberalism.

It's the Orwellian state. Bush is essentially telling us that this "war" is peace, or "safety" in his jargon. it guarantees the big War Machine corporations endless fat profits at the public tit. His religious fascist friends are telling us that ignorance is strength. How far are we from "freedom is slavery"? The Executive Branch has been exposed as setting up its own judicial system with its own secret courts and secret prisons. Again, it is sold to us as necessary for our "safety". Damn scary.
