The tragic death of a aussie motorsport legend- Peter Brock

I cannot believe, Peter Brock an Oz 5Lt V8 touring car legend has been killed in a targa racing event in Western Australia, racing a Daytona Coupe. "Brocky" as he was known, was a Bathurst champion. He was also called the "King of the Mountain" and "Peter Perfect". With 9 wins of one of the worlds greatest long distance touring car races. A record that will be almost impossible to beat. He was to Australia what Dale Earnhardt is to the US. A driver of a talent, which can be measured in the generations of people who watched his victories.

He will be remembered for his famous race number 05. Used as a constant reminder of the legal blood alcohol driving limit legislated across Australia. He was also tireless in his message of responsible driving.

The wins at Bathurst in the 500 and 1000 mile races were always shown with full TV coverage. The motor racing incar footage we all now take for granted were pioneered at this event, with every Bathurst race day followed on the TV, at a mates place, having a BBQ and a few beers. This is the standard way to watch the race in Aust and NZ.

The Bathurst 1000 on Oct 8 somehow won't be quite the same.

Here's Cheers to a champion bloke R.I.P "Brocky"

Andrew

I think the blood alcohol part of the 05 allegory was incidental.

To a small way you are right. The motorsport achievements of Brocky do outshine the 05\BAC link. He was still passionate enough to use the number as a reminder of the cost drink driving was having on Victorian roads. I met the man briefly about 17yrs ago at a corporate function and he felt it important enough to bring the subject up. So I do too.
He adopted the 05 number at a time when Victoria had a yearly road toll of over 1000 deaths. I think the message he put out on road safety and drink driving certainly saved peoples lives. As he also inspired our current Oz racing drivers.
