Another interesting note: the early Germans did not execute the mentally ill in order to not offend the inner demon that possesed the sufferer, nor did they put criminals in prisons, because they had no concept of prison. One was either executed or banished. The preferred place to banish them was to a useless cold jut of rocky land known today as Denmark. Of course, this stimulated ship building and a culture based on criminality. In the 2nd century AD these early Viking bands began to raid the coast of Roman Gaul and Britain. The Romans called them "Scanda Navians" or "criminals in boats" (Scanda - modern "scandal", Navia - modern Navy, etc). The Germans essentially created a gene pool of murderers and crazy people. Today their descendents are the upper crust of English society.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
