I think the Nazis were the only ones who were fundamentally aware that they were evil, and embraced it. The Japanese, on the other hand, saw themselves as the saviours of Asia, who were going to drive out the white Imperialists from their colonies and the godless Commies from China. Ultimately, their idealogy was based on a religious faith, Shintoism, that contained a moral code that excused their atrocities, you know, like us in Iraq.
