Their concept of war was that they would fight for centuries if necessary. Again, your basic intellectual problem is a definition of "winning". When we left, peace finally came to that horrible, unfortunate land, after two centuries of fighting the French, the Japanese and us. They won. It is hard for Americans to accept, but Asian cultures are so corrupt Capitalism is a curse on them. They are much happier under Communism, and it will allow them to evolve to a modern society where Capitalism will be possible. Just look at the Chinese. We are so blind to our own arrogance. You say "Communism bad", "Capitalism good", not even considering that the opposite was true for these people, and that we lost because of it. They simply wanted to be Communist, by huge majorities. The Vietnam War began when we refused to accept the results of a UN sponsored election, in which Ho Chi Minh was elected PM of Vietnam.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
