All reasons I'm glad I moved away. The whole state seems infatuated with itself, and is rife with petty small-time political scandals that become more important than they really are.

Check out the history of Jerry Costello sometime - he's the Representative from the area where I grew up in southern Illinois.

There was a trial some years ago with a very crooked pair of attorneys, and Costello was implicated in the press (resulting in a House Ethics Committee investigation). He managed to distance himself from his life-long friends and retain his seat, but this type of thing goes on all the time.

Costello, incidentally, is a pro-life Democrat. He's always been a Democrat, because in Illinois like most states, you have a hard time winning elections in small towns if you aren't. However, Costello is conservative enough to be a Republican in a lot of places. Goes to prove that it's not always about the party, but it IS always about the person.

Yes. Corruption in your home state requires a certain panache. If you're going to pass it out, make sure everyone gets what's coming to em.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Would you like to borrow some of our Louisiana politicians? They can train yours how not to get caught.
