I've been offered a 1979 Bonneville 750 for $3,000. 7,000 miles, has original headlight and front tire, is in excellent shape except for road burns on exhaust pipes. Is the price out of line? These were fine bikes in their day, wondering if they will have collector value in the future. Any and all opinions apppreciated, I have five days option on it.
Well condition is everything on these old ladies, but $3k would be reasonable even for a tatty one.You would have to pay that in £ for a fine one here. The good news is that spares are plentiful and relatively cheap. If the exhaust does need to be replaced, you can get replicas in stainless.
Had a few bonnies , I take it's the US spec with disk's front and rear and cast wheels not wire wheels ( which don't look quite so good but are better for wear and tear and stopping) ? The price sounds far for over there ,if in good nick, The spares that where in the UK have mostly gone to New Zealand through a guy called Dallas Rankin . You can get most of the needy things to keep em in top nick with munroe still making barrels and heads in the UK . If you buy and need links for parts I have heaps of info on then . You crazy young whipper snapper you , I can just see you down the Ace Cafe with the ton up boys having a jar and talking shit . Hasn't the 750 got an ugly tank ! get a 650 tank and the look is much sweeter. As for collector value in the future , No not the US spec 750 you sould be looking for a 650 69 or so they are the ones that are getting good Money .

If asking prices are anyting to go by-all Meriden Triumphs are pretty much collectors items now, aren't they?
Wish I had kept my '76 Commando Mk2A-that was a peach, except I was nearly killed on it (by a woman in a Mini of all things, how embarrassing, no wonder I hate fucking Minis!!!)
all Meriden Triumphs are pretty much collectors items now, aren't they? , Yeah but the prices have rocketed on the old 650's , as they did on Goldstars DBD32-34's and Vinnies , now you pay as much for a 500 as you did 6 year ago for the thou . Muuurrhaha Commando's I had a 850 about 1987 yellow and naughty , love them pipes love that thunder . They are now being remade in the states you know and the whole bike is a peach and who said the Americans can't make motorcycles , they can make Norton's

Wow, I haven't thought about Norton for years! A friend of mine bought his on a trip to Europe years ago. NICE machine that was too.
Those were British bikes back in the 60s and 70s were they not?

I was really hot for this deal, but then I saw something that has queered the deal. Originally the guy had the bike up for a 4500$ reserve on ebay. The current bid was $2000, so I put in a bid of $50 increments to a limit of $3,000, just to see what would happen. So the bike goes to $2100, and sits there, with me as the high bidder, for three days until near the end of the auction. In the last 36 minutes of the auction, some bidder, whose feed back was as a seller - she is some kind of ebay dealer, jumps in, and bids it up until she busts my three grand at like $3050. So I go say la vee, I like the bike at 3k but I'm not bidding more than that, my hope was that I could negotiate with the seller when the auction was over. Then I get a letter from the seller, saying the high bidder (this is someone with a 100% feedback rating mind you) welched on the deal, and he will go for the three grand I topped out on, offer good for five days. I was hot for it until it struck me that he was probably in cahoots with the other dealer, who's role was to roll my bid to my max, and then later she would conveniently become a welcher. Now I'm worried about the character of the seller, which means the bike may be a screw job. That then leads me to worry why a 27 year old bike would have only 7,000 miles, I mean that is like 300 miles a year, that just doesn't make sense. I'm probably going to pass, if anyone else is interested send me a PM and I'll give you his contact info. Bike is in Central PA somewhere.
