I totally agree with that.

On the other hand when America says "the war is over", it's over.

It happened in 1954 during the French, British and Israeli invasion of the Suez when Eisenhower turned Egyptian defeat into victory.

It happened again in 1973 when Russia and the USA pressured Israel to stop its offensive after it had surrounded the Egyptian third army.

And it happened this time in Lebanon.

Israel is too dependent upon the US for financial, military and diplomatic support to resist Washington's demands. And, admittedly, Bush went on a far out limb delaying the end of this war for over a month until he realized that Olmert lacked the courage, intelligence and insight to complete the job.

If the Israelis couldn't defeat and disarm Hezbollah after twenty years of brutal occupation in Lebanon, what makes you think they could do it now? Israel got their asses handed to them; they lost, big time. This kind of asymmetrical combat ensures that the normal state-to-state rules pertaining victor/vanquished status don't apply. Hezbollah wins by not losing, and Israel loses by not winning. Hezbollah will never be defeated on the battleground. The same goes for the Taliban. These groups are far too tightly interwoven into the fabric of their respective regional cultures, to be defeated militarily.

I think the point was to try to get them out of South Lebanon. If it isn't too late, someting needs to be done about the power pulling the strings, Iran. Otherwise it's going to haunt us.

If Israel had not left Lebanon in the first place this never would have happened.

That is a lesson for the future: no more unilateral withdrawls.

If Israel had never invaded Lebanon in the first place, hezbollah wouldnt even exist.

I heard Ehud Barak, Israel's former prime minister, make that point on FOX.

Of course he was trying to justify his decision to withdraw Israeli troops. What else could one have expected him to say? That he made a grievous mistake?

Israel invaded Lebanon in 1982 to expel the PLO and they did. Their mistake was withdrawing back across the blue line in 2000. Had they not done so, the katushas would not have had the range to hit northern Israel.

Iran would make sure that Hezbollah exists no matter what the circumstances on the ground..

(Bush and Olmert can be excused for their overly optimistic appraisal of the outcome of this conflict considering that the former effectively acquiesced to the incompetence of the latter).

Olmert has put Israel's very existence into jeopardy by emboldening her enemies. Have you seen the celebrations in the streets of Lebanon? Have you heard the rhetoric coming out of Damascus and Tehran today?

Shades of Chamerlain: Olmert holding a useless piece of paper (this time from the U.N.) declaring "peace in our time."
That’s very true. The Syrians and the Iranians have already started to cultivate the “victory”. They’re also threatening the current anti-Syrian majority.

So essentially the Lebanese government entered into an agreement with the UN to stop the bloodshed but it has no intention of keeping its end of the bargain.
The Lebanese government cannot disarm Hezbollah without Hezbollah consent. It’s the only way that works.
