What I heard or read, could be totally Cuban or Castro's propaganda. But I thought he sent the political dissidents to the USA (?)

Remember that time he emptied some of the jails and sent them to Florida on a boat?

I'm glad to see some feedback, because I have nothing in the way of evidence for anything I wrote here (it is purely heresay). That's funny, "heresay" is spelled very close to "heresy" - that might apply here too

I had some Mexican friends in college. They said that every Mexican presidenté leaves office as a billionaire.

I think our friend Salvador Allendé had a few million in a Swiss bank account too. Hell, he was supposed to be a communist or a socialist too, wasn't he?

The way I look at it, if you manage to hold onto your job as 'dictator' for 50 years, you're doing something wrong if you don't make that list.

Anyone in very powerful positions such as those that do not come out of office a millionaire is dead or dumber than a rock; but they don't necessarily have to be corrupt. I too had several Mexican friends, including the niece and two nephews of the president at the time and they were very wealthy going into office. (I used to love to visit: They would pick me up deplaning and walk me around customs into awaiting secret service cars and off to the their places...)

Wow - nice experience!

I went to Mexico City with one of the guys I knew, and his family had a lot of money too (father had a couple of car dealerships). He was the guy who told me the "billionaire" story.

Another thing I remember coming from him was this: Every official in Mexico can be bribed. The only difference is that the higher up he is, the more expensive it gets

I think one of the reasons people voted for wealthy candidates is because they thought they would be above reproach. I know how rumors abound among those out of power regarding those in power, whether they are true or not. I can't say my friends families were squeaky clean, but I would take that kind of talk w/ a grain of salt. All I know for sure is that their family members in power were never accused of bad stuff by anyone who really knew what they were talking about, and never indited or prosecuted, let alone convicted of any wrong-doing.

It seemed to me at the time, that bribery was just a way of life down there because it was so common - kind of like bartering at the markets.

We were cruising around one day, my friend with Mexican license plates was driving. A motorcycle cop pulled us over, they chatted in Spanish, then we started following him, presumably down to the station. My buddy said "Watch this, he's going to want a pay-off"

Sure enough, after about 10 blocks, he pulled over, and us behind him. "Gilbert" paid him a few pesos, and we were on our way.

I am in no way trying to argue the point you made about your friends, by the way. I'm just relating another story about the fantastic time I had down there.

One last thing came back to me too: He told me "You can't swat a Mexican fly". I tried, and he was right, it's impossible, they are too fast!
