I think Castro began as a revolutionary and overthrew Battista, a definite dictator and american puppet. Today, since that is such a closed society, we (the general public) don't know much about what goes on a mere 90 miles from Florida. I think it is safe to say that Castro is
a russian puppet though.
However, I think the average cuban is better off under Castro's version of communism than he was when Battista was in power. What revenue they lost when he virtually eliminated the tourism industry, was regained by the russian-subsidized sugar cane crop. I don't know what impact their fine cigars and rum have in the general economic scheme.
One thing I've always admired about Fidel is that I think
he remains a "people's president" without a palace, limousines, and those sorts of things.
If any of my comments are incorrect, someone please
correct me, because I'd like to learn more about the current situation there.
