Why most Americans are still stigmatized by GAY LIFESTYLE.

It amazes me that the GAY contingent here in America thinks that Americans
have forgotten why AIDS was at epidemic proportions all through the 1980s.
Even after the cause of AIDS was discovered and the prevention (condoms)
was declared MANDATORY for "safe sex", the numbers show that gay men still REFUSED to show any concern for their own safety or that of the general public.
Is it really any wonder why most Americans are still stimatized by this group?
Remember bath houses in major cities being shut down because of the epidemic proportions of the AIDS virus in the U.S.?

We haven't forgotten and never will.

A new AIDS epidemic on the rise? Yes!

National health officials are warning of a potential new surge of AIDS cases among homosexual men.

“The signs are unmistakable. There’s the potential for a whole new wave of HIV infections, especially among the young,” said Cornelius Baker, executive director of the Whitman Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C.

From 1999 to 2005, studies reveal that the number of HIV infections grew by 8% after a relatively long period of decline since 1994. Of special concern was the rate of HIV infection among homosexual men, which jumped 14% over that same period.

Experts say one of the most significant causes of this trend toward higher infection rates is that homosexual men – especially in younger age brackets – are simply drifting away from following the “practice safe sex” mantra of earlier years.

Harold Jaffe, director of the National Center for HIV, Sexually Transmitted Diseases and Tuberculosis Prevention (NCHSTP) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said, “Several factors seem to contribute to this high-risk behavior, including fading memories of the early epidemic, illicit drug use and treatment optimism.”

In the early 1980s, “gay” bathhouses helped fuel the AIDS crisis, as homosexual men cruised those locations looking for numerous casual-sex encounters. Today, according to one story by ABC News, the Internet may be fulfilling the same role as the bathhouses.

“The Internet is a new venue associated with high-risk sex. It is a quick and easy way to meet new partners,” said Sabina Hirschfield of the Medical and Health Research Association in New York City.

Hirschfield and other researchers surveyed nearly 3,000 homosexual men who use www.Gay.com, which describes itself as “the world’s largest gay & lesbian [Internet] destination.” According to ABCNews.com, 84% of respondents said they met sex partners online, while nearly 66% said they had recently had anal sex without using condoms. The survey also found that about 25% said they had had more than 100 sex partners over the course of their lives.

Do you think that if gays were allowed to marry and settle into stable marriages maybe they would be more inclined to be less promiscuous?

Do you think that gays are inherently greater risk takers (and it is true, by their own admission they do engage inmore risky sexual behavior)?

Or do you think that the hatred that they feel from society leads to self-loathing which in turn leads to that kind of behavior?

I am not willing to write off a significant portion of the human population w/o first trying to figure the reason for their behavior.

BTW, I think that you are using the wrong 'stigmatize" incorrectly.

You raise some valid points, that need to be debated. I hope this thread does not degenerate (no pun intended) into the usual hate-filled stuff that we see here lately.

Of course no straight people ever partake in any risky "no strings attached" sexual behavior. All you have to do is do a search on Adultfriendfinder.com to see how us straight folk are looking for love and long term relationships.

In regards to indiscriminate shagging, gay men are only more successful because their partners are other men. Straight men would be just as triumphant if women were hard wired in such a way.

( No I don't.)

Do you think that gays are inherently greater risk takers (and it is true, by their own admission they do engage inmore risky sexual behavior)?

(You answered your own question, YES. I think they are also.)

Or do you think that they hatred that they feel from society leads to self-loathing which in turn leads to that kind of behavior?

(No, I don't think that. That is just an excuse. I would call it dangerous behavior that border on the criminal. Knowing you have AIDS and still having unprotected sex (not even telling your partner).

This topic among heterosexuals has never been about AIDS, but about the Christians zelots who tend to view homosexuality as a profound evil; who generally believe it is changeable, chosen, abnormal, unnatural and immoral behavior, regardless of the nature of the relationship. Fundamentalist zelots commit significant effort against homosexuality and homosexual rights. For example, the Southern Baptist Convention expelled three of their congregations who had conducted a study of homosexuality, had concluded that the denomination's beliefs were invalid, and who welcomed gays and lesbians as members. Religious zelots feel that the Bible teaches that homosexual behavior is always a serious sin. Allowing sexually active gays and lesbians to be ordained, or to have their committed relationships recognized by the church would involve a drastic and unacceptable lowering of church standards. The church would be condoning sin. They also oppose including sexual orientation in hate-crime and anti-discrimination legislation.

I dont see gays banging down your door trying to convert you yet people like you do everything in your power to deny them any rights. To promote hate crimes, and discrimination at any chance you get. Its your ignorance that promotes intolerence.

Now lets clear up some facts... The first report of HIV was back in 1959 in the Congo, and was spread by hetrosexuals within Africa.

A blood sample of a Bantu man, who died of an unidentified illness in the Belgian Congo in 1959, made him the first confirmed case of an HIV infection.

Source: CNN In an article, "1959 and all that: Immunodeficiency viruses," by Simon Wain-Hobson of the Pasteur Institute in Nature (Volume 391, 5 February 1998, pp. 532-533), Wain-Hobson wrote: "Where did HIV [Human Immunodeficiency Virus] come from? Both of the AIDS viruses, HIV-1 and HIV-2, originated in Africa.

http://fohn.net/history-of-aids/

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/aid...t.exclude.html

However, some have suggested that certain rural African populations of humans may have been infected with an immunodeficiency virus for many decades, centuries, or even millennia (Montagnier, 1985; Hahn, 1990; McClure, 1990), and Ewald (1991, 1994) has described an evolutionary model in which virulent strains are placed at a selective advantage by higher rates of sexual partner change.

http://www.utexas.edu/ftp/depts/syst...l/mindell.html

Although many scientists already suspected the human immunodeficiency virus originated in African primates, the natural lair of HIV has remained a mystery since the disease surfaced almost 20 years ago. Finding the ancestor of AIDS not only solves a long mystery, it may help guide researchers looking for a cure.

After analyzing the genetic makeup of a similar virus that infects chimpanzees, scientists from the University of Alabama at Birmingham say that one subspecies of chimpanzee harbors a virus that gave rise to the current epidemic.

"This species is the source of the human AIDS virus," said Dr. Beatrice Hahn, who presented the work Sunday in Chicago during the annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, a meeting that focuses on AIDS. A report will also appear this week in the journal Nature.

Two types of HIV cause AIDS in people. Dr. Hahn studied HIV-1, the type of AIDS virus that has spread worldwide. The origin of the second type, HIV-2, has been traced to the sooty mangabey monkey. HIV-2, which so far has mostly remained in Africa, does not cause disease as quickly as HIV-1, nor is it as easily spread.

The Pan troglodytes troglodytes, the subspecies of chimpanzee thought to have given the disease to humans, are killed for meat in the same west central African region that has been the epicenter for the AIDS pandemic. The chimpanzee's natural habitat is Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and southern Cameroon.

Dr. Hahn and her colleagues believe that slaughtering the animals - "a bloody undertaking," as she called it - exposes the hunters to vast amounts of blood and allows the virus to slip into the human population. The chimps could have also transmitted the virus through bites. Her studies cannot determine when the jump occurred.

Very nice research rstone, but you did not address even one point in my post.

Me a religious zealot? Nobody has ever called me that before. I'm an atheist.

Don't be so defensive, it moves you in the opposite direction of any point you're trying to make.
