Israel Threatens UN Peacekeepers

Israel threatened to attack UN peacekeepers if they attempted to repair bomb-damaged bridges in southern Lebanon. UN officials contacted the Israeli army to inform them that a team of Chinese military engineers attached to the UN force in Lebanon intended to repair the bridge on the Beirut to Tyre road to enable the transport of humanitarian supplies.

According to the UN, Israeli officials said the engineers would become a target if they attempted to repair the bridge.

Senior UN officials reacted angrily to the destruction of a temporary causeway over the Litani river overnight. "We must be able to have movement throughout the country to deliver supplies. At this point we can't do that," said David Shearer, the humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon. "The deliberate targeting of civilian infrastructure is a violation of international law."

I agree with you

The Israelis should allow them to rebuild the bridge....

and then bomb it again.

On a related note 3 Chinese UNIFIL observers were wounded when a Hezbollah mortar round struck a UN outpost. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1678759/posts I guess Hezbollah must have done this on purpose. That would be the logical conclusion given the hysteria which the Israeli strike generated a few weeks ago. And yet no security council condemnation, no stirring speeches at the U.N., no allegations of deliberate targeting by Kofi Annan.....

The world body, once again, at least has demonstrated a consistent double standard.

So your comparing the KILLING of 3 UN peacekeepers by Israel to the lightly wounding of 3 Chinese Observers??

While it is always unfortunate for anyone to be wounded, the only thing you have consistently demonstrated is your lack compassion for those UN peacekeepers who were killed by Israel, and using that horrific tragedy as some kind politcal tool to divert attention away from the fact that Israel intentionally KILLED UN Observers. Keep the spin going...

OK. I will oblige you.

Please explain to me how you aim a morter round in order to main but not kill. It's sheer blind luck that no one was killed. My point (which went right over your head) is that if Israel is held to the standard that hitting a U.N. observation post is a priori a deliberate act then so was this one.

Got it now?

Somehow I doubt it....

My point (which went right over your head) is that Israel KILLED UN observers, and your comparing that to 3 lightly wounded observers. The fact remains that when you KILL people you are held to a higher standard than when you bruise someone. Sure, it might of been sheer dumb luck no one was killed, but you can't change the fact that Israel intentionally killed UN workers. Either way your attempting to spin this into..

"Well we intentionally killed 3 UN workers deliberately... and see hezbollah tried to to... sooo therefore we are justified in targeting them."

Got it now?

Somehow I doubt it.
