I have seen the invasion of Iraq with or without an international mandate as a mistake. But once troops were over there, I was hoping for some positive result. I still would hate to see thousands of American, and ten thousands of Iraqi lives lost in an exerxcise of futility. If the war had to happen, the wrong Country was invaded. Iraq was not the greatest danger in the region, but now the Country and the wars consequences might be. The outcome that Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld had envisioned, a quick in and then out in 2003, and Saddam replaced with a goverment slightly related to the demo in democracy, did not come about. They did not involve any of the ME experts of the intelligence community or the military in the planning, got a bunch af gung ho politicians and military brown nosers who agred with their dilettante assessment and off they went. Even the Mullahs of Iran were pragmatic enough to only get rid of a few top people, change the name, but otherwise keep the secret police in place. Intead of somehow utilizing them, the administration sent 300,000 Iraqi soldiers home - with their guns. What we have now is constant attacks on U.S. soldiers, and a massive civil war across sectarian lines. Iraq has become the largest terrorist training ground on the planet, courtesy of the U.S. tax payer to the tune of over 300 billion dollar. The images of Muslim suppression can be seen on TV all over the World and could be al Qaeda's greatest recruitment tool ever. This is all so sad, what a mess.
