Dag Hammarskjöld, 1956

"You are convinced that the threat of retaliation has a deterrent effect. I am convinced that it is more of an incitement to individual members of the Arab forces than even what has been said by their own governments.

You are convinced that acts of retaliation will stop further incidents. You believe that this way of creating respect for Israel will pave the way for sound coexistence with the Arab peoples.

I believe that the policy may postpone indefinitely the time for such coexistence... I think the discussion of this question can be considered closed since you, in spite of previous discouraging experiences, have taken the responsibility for large-scale tests of the correctness of your belief."

United Nations Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld,
Letter to David Ben-Gurion, 1956.

History has proven Dag Hammarskjold wrong.

Of course we have the benefit of hindsight but it is only after Egypt and Jordan concluded that defeating Israel on the battlefield was a futile endeavor that they finally signed a peace treaty and abandoned their vision of eradicating Israel.

Because, of course, fifty more years of bloodshed have created lasting peace in the Mideast. Exactly which alternate universe are you ringing in from, btw?

Did you actually read my post? I said that after Israel had defeated Egypt and Jordan the latter two had wisely concluded that exterminating Israel was futile and they signed a peace treaty.

Egpyt IS at peace with Israel. Right?

Jordan IS at peace with Israel. Right?

It's going to take a few more bombs to convince Hezbollah of this but, hey...we're working on it.....

At least he was one head of the UN that got stuff done like in the Congo. I'm not racist but I would go so far to say that Anan is no more than a token Black man in charge of an international body that basicly talks about issues passes some piss poor resolution and then pretends like the whole thing never happened. Like Rawanda.

Of course I read your post. That doesn't mean I must agree with its premise. Nowhere is it required by Hammarskjöld's argument that Israel must be continually at war with each and every one of its neighbors at all times. (Although they have come close, and as an example, when Bush I declared that Iraq had to vacate Kuwait, Israel was at the time occupying the land of each and every one of its neighbors.)

More to the point, though, the accommodation between Jordan, Egypt and Israel came about via diplomacy, not bloodshed. Thanks to Jimmy Carter.

And even more to the point, if you think that bombing still more Arabs will bring lasting peace, then you're as wrong as David Ben-Gurion was. Fifty years have taught you both nothing, and he at least has the excuse of being dead.

....

Diplomacy has always been the Arabs' back up plan after they had repeatedly failed on the battlefield.

That's my point.
