I know lots of guys who volunteered when I joined up. I've known quite a few since. Most of us joined for the bennies primarily. But the truth is, the bennies aren't worth the cost of loss of freedom. I knew that before I went in, as did most people who I have spoken too about it. The bennies were just a good excuse to do something right and get paid and travel and get some bennies. Also, youngsters, especially boys, have this "prove something" motivator. If it is undirected or undisciplined it can get a kid to do some strange and bad things. The military has a regimen that focuses it in a tight, hot little circle.

I guess I tried to be subtle. Let me make it clearer.

I would NEVER have volunteered nor would I have served if drafted, did I not love my country. The bennies just made the meal easier to eat.

How's that?

Yes, that was my point exactly. I had no interest in killing pallet-fulls of brown people when I was considering joining up.

At the time, I considered the defense of our borders, territorial waters and airspace to be a noble cause, but to be the defenders of first order for corporations and various and sundry crass political imperatives didn't appear to be my primary interest. I'd like to see a volunteer military force collapse and atrophy if the latter is all it's used for in the contemporary setting. I'd prefer a compulsory military force for the former, really.

That choice is a major benefit of living in a liberal democracy.

Nope you will need a larger sample to statistically come to a somewhat representative answer.

You sure have some wacky ideas. That's like suggesting that most people get jobs for the salary, rather than some sense of loyalty to a corporation.

Yes, wacky indeed. Most of us dream of better and more luxurious accomodations for our CEO, really we do.

I would not have it otherwise. I want him to be well fed and cared for to be in turn loyal to us and our interests. Why not?

I would have it otherwise, in fact I insist

I don't expend much energy worrying about the wealthy and uber-wealthy; they've got enough folks on the payroll taking these trivial matters into consideration. If you want to polish their boots, then be my guest. Their loyalty has proven to be transitory at best, time and again. F@#k em!
