if you joined to get an education then you didn't really join to defend you country. you probably saw it as a tradeoff.. still not pure patriotic reason.

what mbzer says sometimes isn't all too funny but many times he hits the nail on the head.

No no no I don't buy that. When we join a professional military we are expected to maintain a standard to have a functioning and viable fighting force. The military does not pay for our education as simply a trade off for "serving". The education is meant to sustain a broad military organization that needs various skills other than being idle in some fort until we are called upon to fight.
I must admit that our military is the finest military in the world because of the opportunities it offers though education while a member and even post service such as the GI bill that helped our country propel itself right after WWII.

Everything in life is a trade-off. Why can't you defend your country and get an education?

Life in a van by a river must be strange indeed. Perhaps you should try a different river...

i am not arguing this to be a bad idea but what i am saying is that i see most who join join for other reasons then patriotism. i don't know nor do i care the reason prof joind. he feels good about his time in, good for him. i didn't join because our military hasn't DEFENDED our country in very, very long time and going to kill people for any other reason is unacceptable to me.

Our military does not decide who to kill or fight. It is run by a civilian body and thankfully so, otherwise we would be no different than a third world dictatorship. Unfortunately sometimes the administration at the helms like this one is incompetent and that's probably the source of your bitterness.
Oh, I am not in the military
