Tunis I believe but my family was from smaller towns. Not sure exactly where this occured. See if you can find out for me.

Yes the Algerian revolution was quite bloody. I remember seeing a French propaganda booklet from that era filled with pictures of atrocities that Arabs had commited on other Arabs who were felt to be collaborating with the French. Mutilation of their genitals and other such things. Truly horrific pictures.

As I said before north Africa for many years was actually quite tolerant of their jewish population. Before WWII the Europenans were much worse. After the creation of the state of Israel things changed for them.

I know all too well what you are saying.
Ah, my question to you would be, would you call the "moujahedeen" or the FLN guys terrorists or freedom fighters?

I don't know much about the Algerian revolution to say. As far as the "mujahedeen" are concerned are you referring to the Afgan fighters who defeated the Russians (with our help)? I believe that they morphed into Al Queda, no?

Not everything is black and white. Some are shades of grey. Those ambigous cases should not prevent us from judging the extremes however.

No no the word "moujahedeen" was used way before the Afghan resistance against the USSR. The FLN and ALN were Algerian factions that fought the French and they were referred to as moujahedeen. The FLN was (Le Front de Liberation National) and it took power of the political scene in Algeria until the nineties where a general election unseated them from total control. The interesting part about the FLN is that it is not a religious party and that made it a target of the Islamic extremists that threw the country into a civil war after that same election (1991).
The French during their war in Algeria (1954 - 1962) called them terrorists but our President Kennedy did not buy it, go figure

In fact didn't the Islamists win the general election in Algeria (within the last decade) only to have the electoral results voided?

Wasn't Hamas duly elected in the Palestinian territories?

Seems it's a toss up whether "free" elections in the Arab world would actually elect fundamentalist regimes.

One day we may become nostalgic for the tyranny of Sadaam, Nasar and Asad.

This day may actually be rapidly approaching in Iraq.

Yikes!

Yep right on, the elections were tossed by the military and turmoil through death squads took over. It was a mess. I think over 200K people got killed in the last 12 years. Not much news on that here in the US because as long as oil supplies were not effected then who cares
You are absolutely right, most Arabs understand force and oppression as form of authority but Lebanon had potential. It had gone through the metamorphosis Algeria is going through in a more horrific way but its population is more cosmo and very international in its tastes. It was a matter of a little more patience and faith and I was certain that Hezbollah would have vanished into oblivion but alas Israel messed it up big time.
You see bebe I am afraid that this incursion is going to actually reduce Israel’s holdings in terms of leverage able land. This is actually weakening Israel in the long term. Very bad strategic move I would say

How would one determine whether a dead Arab man in southern Lebanon was Hezbollah or not?
