And yes, unions also press for more untaxable benefits.
Instead of guaranteeing wages and benefits why not try something really radical and let the market dictate the value of goods, services, and labor? On the flip side, remove all taxation of any kind on food and medicine and medical treatment, then remove all income taxes and all deductions and tax just consumption. Oh yeah, remove all corporate taxes, too. Anybody have a clue who actually pays corporate taxes?
I say that because my father was a union negotiator for 20 of his forty years as a butcher. He was the main reason I got a Masters in Economics because all the Union stuff drove me absolutely nuts. We were at loggerheads for years on that one. On the good side his union is one of the most stable and sound for both workers and companies in the Midwest for the past three decades so maybe it all helped. Who knows.
As for an ABSOLUTE FREE MARKET, just go to a Turkish Bazaar and buy and sell all of your goods and services for a month. Your work, your wages, your transportation, your healthcare, everything. Now, do the same for everything you buy, inspect it, verify that you are getting what you just bargained for. Electricity, water, gas. Now, roads, police, fire protection everything.
I hope that new subdivision down the road doesn't out bid you on electricity and water. That would be a shame. Fire protection, that would be interesting free market bidding.
