Personally, I think it's foolish for us to get all caught up in the right or wrong of it. Each side has a different perspective, and each side feels it is justified and right. If I was born and living in Beirut or Damascus, I would have a different sense of the situation had I been born and raised in Tel Aviv. Each side should do everything in its power to assure its survival and maintain its ability to provide as high a quality of life as possible to its citizens. The rest of us should do the same, rather than sticking our nose in where it doesn't belong.
What's stupid is occupation!
That's the root of all.
What's done is done and now each side must have the courage to negotiate in good faith. This is the hardest thing to do while some "children" are playing with their toys blowing up houses, structures and lives.
The mere existence of Hezbollah is because Lebanon saw them as their pawn in this game while Israel still had control of the Sheba Farms in Lebanon proper. I can't speak for the Lebanese put I can understand some of what they did to a point. When the Israelis moved out of the south, Hizbollah should have scaled back but I guess because Israel did not back up from the farms they felt like they did not have to budge either. This is the kind of stupid shit that goes on GS. Next they taunt each other at the borders to see who is chicken until someone gets "kidnapped".
Then you see each one setting objectives based on what they could accomplish. For example this invasion started under the pretext to find, free the soldiers and punish the Lebanese while at it. Hizbollah sees it their way too, they want freed “prisoners of war” that have been in jail since the Israelis left Lebanon. What I don’t understand is why they are POW if Israel was not at war with Lebanon even after they withdrew. This leads me to think that the war between the two was still raging even though it was in détente mode.
So what we are seeing is just a continuation of that war.
If Israel was to be perceived as a peace partner then it should have made a clear demarcation of the end of hostilities with Lebanon after that withdraw. I wonder what are the implications of this vis-*-vis the Geneva Convention.

Why would Hezbollah withdraw? How does withdrawal promote their mandate to eliminate Israel? Remember -- no one on the front line wants war. It is the cowards behind the scenes who promote conflict. Neither Hezbollah nor Israel are the real bad guys here. I feel certain that they each believe in the righteousness of their cause.

I would not go with a blanket statement exonerating Hizbollah GS., especially on the front line. Some of them guys are die hard wakos and would welcome death to meet some helpless virgins in the thereafter.
Hizbollah as an entity can show courage by separating itself as a Syrian or Iranian backed entity and become Lebanese in a true sense while totally disarming and giving a chance for the Lebanese to at last have one army that protects all of Lebanon’s sects. This can be done, it’s not impossible. What Israel need to do is give up the farms and free POW if that’s what they were. I would not venture there unless I knew more, so maybe SA can enlighten us on that issue.
The kidnapped Israeli soldiers should be freed NOW without conditions. The point has already been made clearly and with much innocent blood on both sides.
As to Hizbollah’s twisted mandate, tough shit! They need to grow up and stop thinking of Israel as “la bete noire”.

Holy shit, I agree with that except Israel needs to give-up a thing that is fundamentally important, theocracy. Until they fully embrace a secular democracy they will be a constant irritant to outsiders while believing themselves divinely ordained to occupy their particular pile of rocks.

On the other side, all those nutty messianic religionists with guns need to take a new hobby.

Since neither side will take either course, there will be more blood flowing as each generation gives way to the militaristic religious fanaticism of the next.
