TEMPLE MOUNT NIGHTMARE
Israeli Officials Fear Jewish Fanatics Might Launch Attack At Moslem Sites
On Jerusalem’s Temple Mount To Torpedo Withdrawal From Settlements
Public Security Minister Hanegbi Warns:
‘Such A Terror Attack Could Serve As A Catalyst To Reshuffle The Political Deck’
Broadcast July 25, 2004 on IsraCast.com
‘There has been an unprecedented rise recently in the level of threats by Jewish fanatics who wish to attack the Moslem mosques on the Temple Mount, as a means to sabotage the withdrawal from settlements’ - that warning from Public Security Minister Zachi Hanegbi in an interview with Channel Two TV. Hanegbi noted that the Temple Mount is a far more accessible target than Prime Minister Sharon or cabinet ministers who are guarded twenty-four hours a day.
David Essing reports:
It is the ultimate ‘Doomsday Threat’. A Jewish attack on the Moslem Dome of the Rock or the al Aksa Mosque would be a flash point for the more than one billion Moslems worldwide to launch an all-out Jihad against Israel.
In Hebrew it is called ‘Har Ha’bayit’ the site of the First and Second Temples of the Biblical Israelites. For Moslems, it is ‘Haram al-Sharif’, from where the Prophet Mohamed was said to have ascended to Heaven. At the end of the Six Day War, the Israeli authorities allowed the Moslem Wakf council to continue controlling the Temple; Jews are not allowed to pray there. It and its adjoining Western Wall are the most the most sacred sites in Judaism. Many rabbis even forbid Jews from setting foot on its hallowed ground. For Islam, which came over five hundred years after the destruction of the Second Temple, it ranks after Mecca and Medina.
Some ultra-nationalist religious Jews say Islam has co-opted Judaism’s most sacred site and Moslems have no right to be there. Known as the ‘Temple Mount Faithful,’ they have again petitioned the Supreme Court for permission to go up to the Temple Mount to prey on Tisha B’Av, the Hebrew day marking the destruction of the Temples.
To describe it as a ‘powder keg’ is a gross understatement. In August 1969 a deranged Christian from Australia, Michael Dennis Rohan, tried to set fire to the al Aksa Mosque. At the time, Egypt’s President Nasser and other Arab leaders called for a worldwide Jihad against the Jewish state. It was only the quick capture of Rohan which averted a calamity for Israel.
This then is the background to the threat. Hanegbi said there was no hard evidence about specific people, but there were plenty of very worrying indications and they related to serious thinking and not just on a philosophical level.
Likud MK Ehud Yatom, a former Shabak Security official, has now revealed details of a Jewish terror plot in 1984. He said the Jewish Underground, smashed by the Shabak, was very close to executing a major bombing of Moslem sites on the Temple Mount. Yatom told Army Radio that he personally feared another such attempt adding. ‘May the Almighty protect us from such wicked plots - it could lead to World War Three!’
Adding fuel to the flames, Yehuda Etzion, one of the Jewish terrorists who went to jail for the 1984 plot, says the Temple Mount compound is ‘a worthy target’.
A number of Knesset Members have called on the Attorney General to prosecute Etzion for incitement. Political leaders from both the right and left have called for an all-out campaign to arrest any Jewish terrorist who might be plotting an attack on the Temple Mount. On this everyone appears to agree that such an event would be cataclysmic for Israel.
That is only one side of threat that the Shabak Security Service must now cope with. What happens if a Palestinian provocateur decides to carry out an attack on the Temple Mount in order to arouse the Moslem world against Israel?
