Massoud was his name. He was not a particularly nice guy if I remember. The Taliban took over because he was a son of a bitch, and the people of Afghanistan later came to the conclusion that they were better off with a son of a bitch than they were with the Taliban.

The core problem in Iraq has always been that Iraq is a fiction. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Western Iraq ought to be the same country. Northern Iraq should be a separate country called Kurdistan. Eastern Iraq should be an Iranian client state or a part of Iran. Then peace could come to this place. But the Americans and the British oil companies are not anamoured of this idea, and have kept the place in turmoil since the 1920's, so they can steal there oil.

General Massoud was killed after 9-11 just as northern alliance was about to kick talibani ass out of power. yeah, he seemed like a rather rough fellow but smart and he probably would have been best for them but shit happens. karzi isn't bad though, just powerless.

Afghanistan is another fictional country created by the British. The northern part is ethnically part of several former Soviet Republics. The southern part has been the haven of dope growers and robbers for centuries, and is essentially ungovernable. It's the status quo there. We should have let the commies have it so they could have killed all the dopers, then maybe they would have had a chance. Instead, the criminals who run the place (including Karzai) are probably pushing dope to the CIA, and its government by murder, just like in Iraq. It's the American Way!

General Masoud -- the guy who put the Northern Alliance together by getting past the distrust and tribalism of the locals. He was a serious pain in the balls to the Russians, and had nothing but contempt for Al Qaeda and the Taliban. He was a brilliant military strategist, a skilled diplomat, Western educated, and a man of the people who promoted everything the Taliban stood against, including the education of women from all over Afghanistan. The Taliban and Bin Laden feared he might be able to unite a post 9/11 Afghanistan against them and had him assassinated.

Hezbollah is Arab, and they have been getting along with the Iranians just fine. Shiites are fanatical, and religion outweighs ethnicity. Yes. caught the allusion to Saddam. Like it or not, we would have been better off to leave him alone.

The attack on Masoud was a part of the 9/11 attack by Al Qaeda and occured on 9/9, but he didn't actually die for three or four days.

From what I understand, he was a charismatic character who was in charge of a very undisiplined army that was given to a little too much fun with the local population at times, and he was saddled with Mr. Dostrum as a partner, a fine fellow who is probably in charge of most of the world's heroin supply. I believe Dostrum may now be the current Defense Minister of Afghanistan, a fine slot for a major heroin dealer for sure. Moussaud was extremely well loved by his tribe, I am told.
