I've never back packed Maui, in fact I've never been there. In the times I have been there over the years I have hiked Oahu and the Big Island. Oahu is easy - if you can afford a plane ticket (+-$1200 rd trip approx) once you get there, you can take a bus to the major state parks on the North Shore and hit the trails if you don't want to shell for a rental car - that's the way I did it when I was a young long haired leaping gnome. There is also a reasonably priced hotel in Laiie, Oahu between the hiking areas that you can duck into for a little civilization for a $100 a night, the cheapest hotel in Hawaii and not a bad place - if you don't mind Mormons. It's pretty cool - you can hike the trails all day, then use the bus to get to all the cool little resturants and stores, and the most fabulous beaches you will ever see in your life.
On the Big Island, its a lot tougher. You need a car, and the trails are all in fairly dangerous areas, where earthquakes, poisinous gas and hot lava are not uncommon, altho the biggest hazard is the brittle ground below you giving way and dumping you into a pit, like shown below. There are also few stores in the back country so you got to really huff a heavy pack. But there really is nothing in the world like the Big Island if you want real adventure. On a budget, tho, Oahu is a hands down winner. Maui has a reputation for being an expensive place, but it has a fabulous National Park I want to go to one of these days.
