I had that same problem a couple of months ago--on an expensive Sony XP Pro laptop. I am fairly computer-literate and tried every fix imaginable--even had the local Geeks On Wheels take if for a few days and they couldn't recover my system. (Won't go through all the details here, but would be surprised if anyone suggests anything I didn't try, including all the F2, F8, F10 functions.) To make a long story short, I had to reformat my hard drive and lost everything I didn't have backed up. That is the worst case scenario, but it happens. You may find a workaround if you are lucky, but you may just have to byte the bullet. Good luck!
