The benefit of one is a detriment of the other.

Good advice. A dead body is the desired outcome of handgun use, therefore a benefit. A dead body is not a desired outcome of motor vehicle use, therefore a detriment. Does that help?

Since I will not allow handguns on my property, it would either mean that I has wrested the object from an intruder or I was under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs and was imagining the handgun. Either way, no good would likely arise from the situation. Better to simply disallow the would-be intruder from gaining access to my property.

makes the attacker dead and the family safe. The side benefit of the attacker being expunged from the gene pool.

Handgun "use"? It is the presence of the handgun and the subsequent deterence it provides that constitutes a beneficial "use" of a handgun. That happens FAR more often than the case where someone is shot.

It is a common false premise that handgun "use" = shooting and killing someone. Thus the classic stat..."a handgun in the home is 43 times/ 14 times/ 9 times more likely to kill someone in the home than a criminal"

Hopefully you have your property posted to let potential intruders know that you don't allow firearms on your property. "No guns allowed on this property."

I would hate to have you inadvertently benefit from the deterent effects of MY handguns. It would be a shame if a criminal mistakenly passed up your house for fear of meeting an armed home owner.

Have you posted you property?

I AM UNARMED. NO GUNS ALLOWED. I WILL CALL THE POLICE.

I suppose first-aid kits, and fire-extinguishers are not allowed either. Better to simply not allow injuries or fire on your property.

Flashlights? No blackouts allowed.

Seatbelts? NO ACCIDENTS ALLOWED.

Societal benefits are the aggregation of individual benefits.

Between 1 and 3 million crimes are thwarted each year by armed private citizens.

(I will let you select the most anti-gun site you can find as a source.)

The shooting sports represent an array of recreational opportunities as valid as any other.
I guess I'm a bit behind on my news headlines...so, forks have now achieved sentience and are threatening physical harm? Who knew?

Assuming those 1-3 million figures are actually real, how many of those "crimes" could've just as easily been thwarted by the victim producing a butter knife with menacing intent?

The recreational sex industry has an array of sporting opportunities which are extremely valid, as well--BFD
