a just-as-simple question in response:

are you more likely to be able to successfully defend yourself in a country which allows
you a firearm, or in a country which deprives you of one? fact is that given the option,
I would prefer the opportunity to defend myself/family with a firearm than with
a baseball bat, a knife, etc....all of which stack the deck against me against a
larger or more powerful opponent(s).

until you have been put in a position in which your life was at risk, you live in a
world in which you think that such risks and threats happen to 'other people'.

for every legislator or congress person who has voted to ban personal ownership
of firearms, I will show you one person (them) who has (armed) security personnel
to minimize such risks on their behalf. would that it be we all had similar options.
we don't. furthermore, case law has already established that we do not have
any legal expectation that law enforcement is *obligated* to protect us during
the performance of their day-to-day responsibilities....merely that they make a
reasonable attempt. of course, we all know that 911 calls are prioritized, transit
time is a reality, and that LEOs in the vast majority of the time, serve as responders,
not preventors.....in the committing of crimes.

i would still prefer a world in which guns weren't needed. but left to the failings
and weaknesses of man, I also know that such Pollyanna day dreamings are
for naught.

I am a proud supporter of the second amendment, despite the fact I cannot legally own a gun yet {I'm 17} but go to the shooting range every weekend and go blast some holes in paper.

Also, another thing is that Sarah Brady, Diane Feinstein, et al will never be able to completely remove the second amendment because of the fact that it is in the bill of right and the precedent set while removing it will make everything else in the bill of rights fair game for removal.

I am a gun owner myself, European, and have lived through unrest in West Africa and a Revolution in Iran, before moving to the U.S. I am familiar enough with arms, that by their sound, I can tell you the make of the gun that has been fired. I can understand that it makes you feel safer to have a Gun in the U.S. But people in Countries with a tradition of gun control do not feel this need. The following per capita comparison US/Canada make it clear, that the individual in a Country with strong gun control laws lives far safer. For example, the U.S. has 16 times per capita the number of murders with fire arms. That said, while I live here, I'll hold on to my guns too. http://www.guncontrol.ca/Content/Cda-US.htm

I'm glad I made it simple enough that you understood the message exactly as I intended. That doesn't often happen. This next one maybe harder. Take your time with it.

Would you then not think it reasonable to look for a solution to a problem at the source of that problem?

Yes, the first thing you should do once you realized you've dug yourself into a hole is stop digging. Next question.
