I heard part of an interview of an Arab academic or politician of some sort. Since I only heard the middle part of the interview I don't know who he was nor who he represented, etc. The interviewer asked why the Arab League has responded so tepidly to the ferocious Israeli attack against Hizbollah's positions in Southern Lebanon.
He said that the Arab League is mostly Sunni and have been concerned about the growing military and political power of Hizbollah and know full-well that Hizbollah is mostly a cat's paw of Iran. The Arab League doesn't want to see either Syria or Lebanon fail but they would love to see Hizbollah severely degraded.
It would seem to me that if he is right, that the Shiite Persians may have a large amount of historical pride invested in defeating the Sunni Arabs. By allowing the Israelis to be the Arab league surrogate fighting the Persian surrogate, the Arab League nations simply cannot lose in this current exchange.
I'll buy it, but that doesn't really address the objectives of the front line players -- unless you just think they're all bein' played.
I think people are way too clever for their own good. So yeah, they are being played and they are playing. Nobody is a virgin. When violence begins to spin out of the control of the initiators, opportunities for everybody rise and fall with the momentary fluctuations of the enterprise.
In this case because of the dependency of the planetary economy on ... oil ..., markets go up and down on wars and rumors of wars as everybody looks for a way to gain stature and resources. The bold get slammed, the timid get slammed and the clever get rich and gain power.

Bot
Yeah, but it's the details that need to get pounded out, and the front line players have their own agendas, or do you think Israel is just following orders from Washington? And if so, to what end?
But the question is can Israel really win? Some say you can never win over a guerilla army. Just now on an interview with Al-Jazira, the leader of Hezbollah denied the Israeli claims about their capability. He said they can still go on for months, and that the 2 soldiers will not be released except as part of a swap.
Quite a predicament!!!
I saw that Al-Jazira interview too, but suspect (as you might imagine) that he was just posturing. I have to look at the actual "data" which indicates that Hesbolah has been crippled. The # of rockets Hes.. has launched into Israel has been reduced by a factor of 1,000. I can't believe they just decided to get humane all of a sudden. These guys are crazy and would be launching every damn rocket they could get their hands on, if Israel hadn't destroyed or captured most of their stuff.

If we don't know what is up, who is to say the people calling the shots know for sure. I think in high stress circumstances like this things become very unpredictable. It is probably no better than playing black jack when it comes to similar odds. It is just too damn sad when the stakes become innocent humans.

Have a look at a map. A strong reason for trying to get rid of Hezbollah is the possibility of an Shia/Iran controlled axis, extending from Iran through Irak and Syria into Lebanon (and next?). It is also a good indicator on how strong the U.S. judges Iranian influence to be in Iraq.
