When you knew there was no God

How old were you when you first realized that there was no God?

And, when did it and why did it hit you that the concept of a God was totally silly?

11 -- I felt so insulted by the ridiculous lesson of my Sunday School teacher, I got up, walked out, and never returned.

Probably 15, I don't recall the exact age. However I don't know if that is exactly true as I am agnostic rather then athiest, but still. It is not the concept that is silly, I mean some people want to explain the natural via the supernatural, whatever that is their buisness. My problem is the bigotry and hatred and fatacism that can come from religion and it is often used to advocate ones personal agenda rather then one of peace and acceptance.

You were wiser than me. I didn't come around to viewing that it was a stupid superstition until I was about 14. My retardation was because my parents sent me off to a Catholic boarding school.

My Thai wife is a Buddhist. And I respect her beliefs. And she respects my dis-belief.

See, I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood, but attended a Baptist church. The Sunday School lesson of the day was about faith in Christ being the only true path toward redemption. Since all my friends were Jewish, I asked the teacher if he was saying that all of my friends were going to burn in hell. Without hesitation, he affirmed my suspicion and I immediately walked out, painfully aware that I wanted no part of this sick and twisted religion.

I haven't reached that age yet. I first embraced agnosticism as a pre-teen because of rational reasons. Pretty much stay on the fence. Lack of objective proof is not proof of an objective.

He's a southerner -- on the fence is as far as he can go without getting getting run out on a rail...
