From a personal standpoint, I will wait to see actual, unbiased, non-political evidence that we, as a society, are causing this.

It will be interesting to watch those in Gov't when or if evidence does come down. Will they continue their finger pointing ways or will they get off their collective asses and actually work for a living. Doubtful.
You don't have to wait. The whole reason for this thread is that the National Academy of Science went before Congress this week to raise the alarm on this. Their report to Congress states that the Earth is warmer than any time in the last 400 years, and probably warmer than any time in the last two thousand years, and that man is the most probable cause of it. This is not the Democratic Party. It's not Al Gore's movie - this is the most prestigious collection of scientists in the country, who produce scientific studies, not political agendas. The links to this were provided in my first post. My assertion is quite clear - it's time to get out of the political arguing on this and start accepting the scientific realities.

Yeah, they want more money so they can smoke more pot while they worship Marx. All hail Marx and Lennon.

Global warming is -- deal with it. Global warming and cooling is cyclic and perfectly natural. We are almost certainly influencing the cycle to some unknown degree. If you're waiting for the erasure of ignorance on this score, you've got a long wait. We don't even understand the workings of our own planetary core, and are unlikely to achieve that understanding within the lifetime of anyone posting in this forum. It seems to me that the prudent course of action is to err to the side of caution, and stop altering our biosphere. That biosphere has been created over millenia by the flora and fauna of our world, and it continues to be generated and regenerated by the living community of our planet. We evolved in it because in part, we are perfectly suited for it. No good can come from altering that biosphere by adding pollutants to our oceans and atmosphere. The planet will recover, we may not.

This is what conservationists term, "the precautionary principle." It is similar to the first law of the Hippocratic Oath: Do no harm. The conservationist's formulation is that man-made changes should not occur unless they can be demonstrated to do no harm. IMO it's a pretty good first-approximation goal but it also has the potential to grind progress to a halt. One of those, "careful what you wish for" kind of things.

Doesn't that depend on your definition of progress?

Uh well, yeah. Back-to-the-cavers will have their standard, back-to-the-penthouse folks will have theirs. It will always be a political accommodation.

So more plants will grow and suck up the CO2. Like in a greenhouse.

Have you ever seen a film called The Emerald Forest? If not, you really should. Given what I know of your vocation and background, you would probably enjoy it more than most...

OK -- who's gonna tell everyone to stop the deforestation of the planet? I'd be happy to, but they probably won't listen...

You can find all the accommodations you need right in Hootersville.
