Hmm, I guess I see your point.

This is why I don't give a damn about what this or that politician says. I care about what I think is important and whose agenda will get us there. A particular politician is unimportant unless one chooses to make him so.

ABSOLUTELY.

Whom would you prefer control the universe, a community of flawed avaricious democratic republics or messianic zealots?

I agree, except that in this instance, I believe this politician led us where most others would not have, and that makes (made) him important.

Then you got suckered into a cult of personality just as surely as his most fervent admirers.

I'm really not attempting a comparison or analogy, but was Hitler important?

Only insofar as people believed in HIM.

If Hitler rode the crest of an inevitable wave that led to Germany's role in WWII, I agree. If however, he was an integral part of orchestrating an event that would have not occurred without his leadership, his importance cannot be overstated.

I agree, but the lessons we learn are different.

I think Hitler was imbued with power because of his cult, as with Julius Caesar, Charles Martel, Genghis Khan, Timur, Napoleon, Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot. Had people NOT paid attention to each of them but instead, analyzed their ambitions, then the world would have been better served.
