Made in the USA!

In May, in the midst of the Ford Motor Co.'s "Red, White & Bold," buy-American ad campaign touting its classic Mustangs, the research firm CSM Worldwide (using statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation) revealed that 35 percent of the 2006 Mustang's content came from overseas, and in fact, that five Honda models and seven Toyota models contained more U.S. content than the Mustang, including Toyota's Sienna minivan, which was 90 percent U.S. [Wall Street Journal, 5-11-06]

Thank you for bringing that up - it's a point that few people realize. There's lots of hostility toward Toyota entering the NASCAR Nextel Cup because it's not an American manufacturer - truth is, Toyota's American operations are's the second largest car company in the USA behind GM, and seems to consistently outsell them.

Both the Camry and Sienna [including drivetrain] are built in Central Kentucky. We have been watching the birth of the Hybrid Camry and Sienna for the past year and it will be a killer to the US auto industry unless they can quickly get their stuff together. I got to drive one on the Toyota test track and it is as quiet, smooth and powerful as the current E Class. Obviously it lacks a few items the E has but overall, it stacks up well against the E. It kills most of the US offerings.

Being smart is knowing the difference, in a sticky situation between a well delivered anecdote and a well delivered antidote - bear.
