Ailes Cracks Whip as Fox News Slips
By Staff -- Broadcasting & Cable, 6/26/2006 8:59:00 AM

Slackers at Fox News Channel, you’re on notice! Your boss is not pleased. Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes is on the warpath following his network’s recent ratings slump, and he won’t hesitate to clean house to turn things around.
So far during the second quarter, the No. 1 cable news channel’s primetime schedule has dropped 22% in its core 25-54 demo and 8% in total viewers. The first quarter was even worse.

What's the market share?

I remember how popular CNN was during and after the first Gulf War. It almost went bankrupt shortly afterward. Though I don't follow the business aspect at all, I'll bet that news popularity follows big news items. So if there's a major event that looks good on TV then folks turn on the news. Etc.

Concerning Fox in particular it's probably a reflection of conservatives in general having been in a funk for the past year or so after their short-lived high while trouncing the Democrats in the recent election. This NY Times story, if it has legs, could be useful to the party trying to pump-up some enthusiasm from a party that's just about degassed it's balloon.

The article did not give market share but I know that Fox is still first on cable but still below all the broadcast networks. I think max saturation for O'Rielly is about 1 Million per show [highest rated cable show] and the Today Show averages about 6 Million daily. that O'Rielly number was before these last two quarters so I don't know what it is now. [Three years living at CNN HQ on my last project pretty much required me to at least listen to the ratings crap]

It will be interesting to see if that group of talent can 'rally the troups'. They run a fine line between trying to be somewhat objective and being in rally mode. Fox ran into a buzz saw with the Santorum deal and got its hand slapped by Ailes Friday. His threats regarding the ratings were to producers AND talent and one of the items was to check facts before opening mic. He also mentioned Dan Rather.

I will get the share numbers before the nite is over, I am extracting some database stuff now and it is giving me the finger.

I've been getting that same finger from ArcMap for a week. Occaisions like this make me wish Microsoft would buy ESRI or drive them under. Gawd, I hate computers. If they weren't so damned fast and efficient I'd never use one. Use one for fun? hah! Okay, I guess this online conversation stuff is redemptive, but that's the internet, not the computer. Rambling, better get a toddy.

They have become so spun they've unspun. I know a lot of people who simply no longer take them seriously - there is no analysis, only political posturing. The entire operation has become an absurd cartoon.
