Bill Gates to step down from Microsoft

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. said on Thursday that chairman Bill Gates will stop taking a day-to-day role in the software giant he founded in order to do more work with his charitable foundation.

Wow. There's hope for him.

The big question is whether you can be a good person and accumulate that much wealth. You need to withhold your incredible wealth and resources from the starving, underprivileged, and impoverished. He seems he's waxing philosophical. Good for him. He just might stuff that rope through that needle yet.

He has donated $600,000 to our project in Eastern Kentucky for computers in schools and public libraries. When two of the libraries were flooded in 03 they were rebuilt and restocked within four months.

My understanding is part of his inspiration is the over 2000 Carnegie Libraries that were built at the first of the 20th Century. He wants to make the same mark on the 21st Century.

That's great. Is he giving to already established charites, or does he need to have his name on it? Not trying to take a cheap shot, just curious really. He could buy and sell Schweitzer, damnit! No, wait...

As a side note, while my computer was downloading and installing the latest Microsoft updates a few days ago, I was thinking about the latest press release about the government getting the go-ahead to watch all of our internet activities. Not that they couldn't already, but I'm wondering if that wasn't the official U.S. government Microsoft monitoring update.

I wonder if any of you noted the date on the article: Published: January 13, 2000, 4:10 PM PST

As an aside, Gates is a pretty smart guy when it comes to his donations. Most of them are of Microsoft products going to educational institutions. Once you've grown up using MSoft products, which ones will you most likely buy for your own personal or business use?

Marketing genius in action!

'Twas brillig and the slithy clones
Did grab and gobble market-share
All mimsy were the Microsofts
And the Apple Mac was there.
Beware the Gang-of-Nine my son
The installed base, the offshore loss
Beware the dreaded UNIX bird
And shun that single-tasking DOS

He took his MCA in hand
Long time the Gang-of-Nine he sought
So rested he by the big blue tree
And hatched his big blue plot

And as in uffish though he lay
The Gang-of-Nine with specs unfurled
Came whiffling through with EISA
And burbled to the world

With PS/2, OS/2 and through and through
His MCA went snicker snack
He left them dead and with their head
His market-share came back.

And hast thou slain the Gang-of-Nine !
Come to my Armonk my big blue boy
Oh frabjous day, Oh MCA
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig and the slithy clones
Did grab and gobble market-share
All mimsy were the Microsofts
And the Apple Mac was there.

You might check and see how much he has ALREADY donated before you castigate his succesful capitalism.

No kidding -- if there's anyone on the planet who has donated more money than Mr. Gates, I'd like to hear who it is...

Neither his name, nor Gates Foundation, are on any of the books, buildings, computers or software [other than Microsoft]. The value of the donation was based on the cost of hardware and wholesale cost of books. Software just showed up. The two libraries that were rebuilt after flooding were not included in that $600K amount.

Oh, and about your computer monitoring you? See that pixel flashing about every 23 seconds on the lower right of your screen?
