Falling-out amongst thieves

Insider trading conviction of Soros is upheld

The Associated Press

Published: June 14, 2006

PARIS The highest court in France on Wednesday rejected a bid by George Soros, the billionaire investor, to overturn a conviction for insider trading in a case dating back nearly 20 years, leaving the first blemish on his five-decade investing career.

The panel, the Cour de Cassation, upheld the conviction of Soros, 75, an American citizen, for buying and selling Société Générale shares in 1988 after receiving information about a planned corporate raid on the bank.

Ron Soffer, his lawyer, said Soros planned to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights, saying that the length of the proceedings had prevented his client from having a fair trial.

"The investigation started in 1989," he said. "The appeals trial occurred in 2004. How can you call witnesses and ask them about what happened in 1988?" The French stock market regulatory authority investigated the matter separately and concluded that Soros had not violated the law or any ethical rules, Soffer said.

Hooray for Milton Friedman. It gets to show that given plenty of money and time enough to outlast witnesses, the more equal ones can buy their own brand of justice. Ali Baba may have left the building, but the fourty thieves (or more) will always be there.

I just hope that Soros gets set back enough to NOT launch his Chery car company out of China next year in the US. It appears that he is intent on bringing SUV's and cars from China that costs $3600US in China and then sell them here for $20K. NICE LIFT. Interesting use of slave labor. He is partnering with Malcolm Bricklin who last brought us the Yogo and prior to that the Bricklin Sports Car in about 1975.

GM is in process of litigation agianst Chery since the cars and trucks are direct lifts of some of GM's designs.

It would be nice if we had SOME manufacturing left in the US by 2010.

It depends. But while we are at it, shouldn't you have a balanced number of asterisks on either side of your comment? The "****Annoy a conservative **" format is just not right. Balance is important in life.
