This may sound surprising, but I think the best governments we have had are when one party controls the legislative branch and the other controls the executive - Reagan and Democrat Congress, Clinton and the GOP Congress - they end up policing each other as they jockey for points, and that ends up benefiting us, and they keep each other from their own brand of excess - spending from the Dems and social fascism from the uber-Republicans. Give me "gridlock" any day. To me the next round of elections' best outcome would be a Guiliani or McCain presidency and a Democrat Congress. We might get a balanced budget and one less war out of the deal. The "crazy" wing of the GOP, who are usually locked up in the closet, ranting on the phone to Rush, ended up in charge, because that's who Bush rode on the backs of into power. Karl Rove has spent his whole life building his black helicopter nutcases/religious nutcases coalition, and it's coming apart in front of our eyes as people recoil in revulsion to what it's really all about. Time to put the crazy uncle back in the attic.
