The Lundburg Report
Libral owner and publisher of the Lundburg Report, Trilby Lundburg, writes a Trilby's Take column, and here is what she said last fall, in reply to the fuss over Katrenia. (The Lundburg Report is w/out a doubt, the most respected energy-related newsletter in the world.)
G O U G I N G -- THE MYTH
Any retailer suddenly hiking street prices should be first presumed part of the solution, not a crook !
For officials and news media to throw the term "gouging" about...is unproductive and short-sighted. This goes for reporters, attorneys general, oil execs, and President Bush.
Sudden price hike is the right mechanism to allocate product, avoid shortage, prevent dangerous garage hoarding of a combustible -- especially at a time of national emergency. Without price hikes panic could happen across the country at any time... and the U.S. gasoline station population could run dry in a single day...
Oil companies freezing prices is another wrong-headed approach, convoluting the free market system of price response to continuous changes to supply and demand.
